 How to propagate strawberries?

Strawberries appeared in the beds of modern gardeners not so long ago, but already managed to catch the fancy of the unique taste and ease of care.To create a plantation from several bushes in the garden, you need to know how the plant propagates properly.

Breeding methods

There are three main ways to grow strawberries:

  • plants can be divided and transplanted after several rhizomes have grown;
  • from seeds;
  • mustache.

Each method has its pros and cons. To understand the essence of each method, it is necessary to consider them in more detail.

Dividing bush

Genetically, the rhizomes of plants can, under certain circumstances, be divided into separate parts, each of which has sufficient strength to create a new plant. There are, however, several disadvantages of this type of breeding strawberry.

Often, the main root of a parent plant dies if the gardener does not properly divide it. In addition, the method is more time consuming and technically complex, since the separation requires accuracy and experience. Most often the method is used in the industrial cultivation of strawberries, because it allows you to quickly get the required number of bushes of a plant, without additional financial and time costs.

Breeding strawberry mustache

To multiply the strawberries with a mustache can any gardener. You do not need to have special knowledge or possess the ability, everything is quite simple, if you follow the recommendations. Strawberries, like strawberries, produce lateral processes that take root well. They can be separated from the bush, without harm to it and transplanted to propagate the plantation.

Growing strawberry plants from the antennae is the easiest and fastest way to grow. Most June varieties produce shoots. Some varieties of strawberries are not propagated by this method, only seeds.

The antennae are called horizontal stems that extend from the base of the plant. Over time, if they are not removed, new bushes will form at different distances.

This became available due to the ability of strawberries to form adventitious roots. In the area of root formations, they relate to the nutrient soil, create a new plant - a clone that is genetically identical to the parent.

Therefore, it is easy to propagate strawberries, there is no need to spend money on the purchase of planting material. Such stepchildren can be planted immediately in the open ground, or in the pot, so that the shrub is fully grown. Some gardeners simply press the antennae to the ground and dig when they have already formed the root system. In this form of plants form a new bed and wait for the harvest.

When planting a young mature strawberry plant, it is very important that the crown remains above the soil level. Burying it can lead to rotting, which will kill the plant.

Many varieties give at the same time several processes from the parent plant. It is possible to grow a new bush from everyone, but you should not leave too much, because it is a big load.

As soon as the strawberries gave roots, immediately cut it from the mother bush. After about six weeks, new leaves will start growing on the sapling, so it's time to cut it off from the main plant.

If winters are harsh in the area, it is better not to leave the antennae in open ground, but transplant into a pot and send to spend the winter in a greenhouse or window. In the spring you can already land on the garden bed.

Over time, strawberries become less productive, so you need to update more plants every three or four years. It is best to seat each new generation in a land that is enriched with compost to avoid disease.

The best time of the year to grow new strawberries is June and July. Until spring, the bush can reach a size sufficient to give the first harvest. In winter, stepchildren should be stored in a container with fertile soil. For planting it is best to take the antennae with an already formed knot, that is, a place where there will be roots.

The bottom side is placed on the compost and pressed a little into the ground, but not so much that the leaves are on the surface.With high-quality watering and sufficient heat, the strawberry bush will take root. It will take him several weeks to do this.

Reproduction by seeds or berries

Growing strawberries from seeds has great potential. Each berry has about 200 seeds that adorn its outer surface. It would seem that this is an easy way to create a huge plantation at your dacha in just one year, but almost all of this looks completely different.

For each seed to be viable, and a strawberry bush grows from it, a lot of strength and additional equipment will be required. Novice gardener will be quite difficult, because he has no experience.

Attempting to grow strawberries from seeds that were harvested from a purchased berry is likely to fail. In other words, plants grown from berries, will be different from those that have received a different method of reproduction. They will demonstrate the genetic traits of grandparents instead of the desired parental signs.

Tips

Experienced gardeners give advice on what to do and what not to do, to grow quality strawberries:

  • the parent bush must be healthy, otherwise the seedlings will also be sore, the berries on it are crooked;
  • when choosing a plant from which the antennae will be taken, you must first remove all the flowers, because they take too much power;
  • at first, it is better not to cut off the shoots from the main bush, but to do this only when the plant is well rooted;
  • multiply by seeds is not recommended if there is not enough experience, because it is not only time consuming, but the result may not please;
  • can be planted not only in containers, but also in cups, which are easily placed on the windowsill;
  • the tip of the stepson should not be too deep in the ground, from this the root system is not formed faster, on the contrary, the seedlings will rot;
  • when dividing the bush, you must be careful not to damage the root system, otherwise the strawberry will die.

Everyone decides on his own which of the breeding methods is the simplest. For a young gardener, the breeding of strawberries with antennae is the most successful means of forming new plants from existing ones.

If you want to experiment, you can try to propagate the strawberry seeds, but do not expect great results, because it is difficult.
