Apple tree "Shtreyfling" ("Autumn striped"): description of the variety of apples, planting and care
Apples are a favorite delicacy of both adults and children.Today, many varieties of this fruit crop are cultivated, both hybrid and naturally occurring. In this variety, a special place is occupied by the variety "Streyfling", the cultivation of which is actively involved in Russian gardeners.
Variety description
This culture has long been cultivated in private and industrial gardens, originally from the Baltic. The variety appeared as a result of natural pollination, which characterizes it from the positive side. Apple has a huge number of names. Some gardeners call the variety “Autumn striped”, “Starostino” or “Shtrigel”. The culture was successfully planted throughout the former USSR, but as for the regions of Russia, Shtreifling gained particular popularity in the middle latitudes of the country. Regarding the zoning of apple trees, one can distinguish the northern, central and middle Volga regions.
The culture is a medium-sized plant, the height of an adult apple can be about 8 meters with a similar width. The crown of the Shtrifelya is distinguished by the density of foliage and spreading branches, has a cauldron-shaped form. The thickening of the apple tree is characteristic of the plant in the light of the presence of a large number of growth shoots and fruit twigs. Skeletal branches are located at right angles to the trunk.
The culture has a mixed-type fruiting, in which fruits are formed on small-sized coats, as well as at the ends of rather long twigs.
"Streyfling" is developing quite rapidly. Bark of shoots has a brown color, buds are convex, wide with gray color. Gray shade is inherent in the green mass of the culture, foliage is formed with notches, in general, the leaf plate is quite powerful, not curved. The main part of the leaves accumulates in the upper part of the shoots. The leaf stalks are not long, have a reddish tint.
Apple tree blossoms in large white inflorescences, flowers form saucer-shaped, petals are rounded. The buds of apple trees are painted in a light pink color.
It should be noted that the following varieties will become good pollinating plants for the apple tree: Antonovka, Welsey, Slovyanka. Shtrielya develops fruits that are larger than the average size, most often the weight of one apple is about 175 grams, but it can reach up to 200 grams.
In order to achieve the harvest with the largest possible fruits, it is necessary to take care of a good level of soil moisture on the site, dry land will be the main cause of fruit grinding.
Apples "Shtrifel" ripen mainly of conical shape, in most cases with uneven ribbing at the base of the fruit. The peel is smooth and glossy, does not have a special density, there is a wax coating in moderate quantities. The fruits have subcutaneous points that are most visualized in apples that have reached technical ripeness. By the time of ripening, the apples get a greenish color with a yellow tinge. Topcoat is most concentrated on the side of the fruit that faces the sun. It is expressed by bright stripes of brown hue. There is a “Streyfling” with red apples, which has the same characteristics as the base variety. The seed nest of the fruit is not far from the base, the chambers are quite large, the seeds are large and slightly elongated at the edges.
The taste of fruit qualities is characterized by a softly pronounced acidity with an unobtrusive spicy aftertaste. The flesh has a yellow tinge, just below the skin is pink. By itself, it is fine-grained, but rather juicy. Given the assessment of taste on the tasting scale, it is worth noting that the variety deserves a mark of 4.5 points.
The chemical composition of apples is as follows:
- acids - 0.57%;
- sugar - 10.1%;
- ascorbic acid - 8.3 mg.
Usually the fruits of this variety are ready for harvest by early September.Apples are not prone to shedding, so they will be on the tree, even if cleaning work will be started late in time. However, overexposure of fruit on the crop will adversely affect the future keeping quality of the crop. The storage period of the “Autumn striped” apple is within 2-3 months, provided that the fruits are kept in a refrigerator or a special fruit cooler. After the expiration of the apples will dry out.
Variety refers to table species. In addition to the fresh way of eating apples, very tasty fortified juices or preserves are made from fruits.
Young culture does not bear fruit. Usually, the period of good fruiting falls on the 8 or 9-year-old apple. But a small harvest of apples “Shtrifel” can be harvested already from a five-year-old plant, and as soon as this age is reached in a crop, the yield begins to grow. Gardeners will be able to get a big harvest of apples from a 10-14-year-old tree. The peak of fruit formation falls on the third decade of culture. During this period, the apple tree is able to please the crop, amounting to about 300 kilograms.
Apple tree is notable for its resistance to negative temperatures, even after frosting, the culture is rather quickly restored. According to some gardeners, the winter hardiness of the Shtreyfling variety exceeds the similar characteristic of Welsey and is at the level of Antonovka or Grusovka Moskovskaya.
Poor drought tolerance is due to the origin of the variety. Apple tree is very painful tolerates insufficient watering, and in too hot a period even can throw off all the foliage. The culture should be attributed to long-livers, in addition, the tree shows good resistance to scab. However, the fungus can develop on a fruit crop in the rainy season, partly affecting the fruit and foliage.
The "Shtrielya" there are options that are also successfully cultivated in garden plots. It is worth noting dwarf and semi-dwarf apple trees, kolonovidny type, autumn and early varieties.
Advantages and disadvantages
Culture has a number of individual positive features:
- high yield of adult plants;
- excellent taste characteristics of apples;
- fortified chemical composition;
- the ability to store fruit for several months without losing product attractiveness and taste;
- This variety is in demand as a raw material for the preparation of juices, jams and other products;
- winter hardiness of the crop, which greatly expands the range of cultivation of the variety;
- good resistance to scab and crush moth.
In addition to the advantages, the brand has some drawbacks:
- late fruit ripening;
- the tree can alternate between productive and lean periods;
- fruits cannot be kept fresh all winter;
- the crop needs moist soil because it is quite sensitive to drought.
Landing
Representatives of the variety are very powerful fruit crops, therefore, work related to rooting and further agricultural technology should be carried out taking into account these individual characteristics. Planting of seedlings should also be carried out taking into account the fact that the culture will become a long-liver in the garden and it will need a lot of space for full development. In this matter, it is important that the tree receives light in full.
When choosing seedlings, it will be better to give preference to biennial plants. Before purchasing and planting, special attention should be paid to the root system of the crop - there should be no mold on it, the roots should be alive and full, in addition, their length should be approximately the same. Long roots can be shortened with shears.
Typically, planting material varieties "Streyfling" rooted in the spring or autumn. The choice of the optimal time for planting is based on the climatic conditions of the region in which the apple tree will be cultivated. Spring works are performed in that period when the snow had already come off the soil and it thawed a little.
When spring planting will need frequent watering, which distinguishes it from rooting young seedlings in the fall.
As practice shows, in the northern regions it is better to perform the planting of a tree in the autumn, since this variety is better to take root in the period of time when the summer heat will no longer be so noticeable. Rooting is usually done in August or in September. In Ukraine and Belarus, the variety adapts better when disembarking closer to the end of September.
Another advantage of the autumn works is the condition of the soil - during this period it will be rich in moisture, which is the most important factor that allows the plant's root system to develop properly.
Immediately before planting an apple tree seedling, you need to find a suitable place. Plots where fruit crops have been grown before are best avoided.
The landing pit is prepared 7 days before the expected date of work. During this period, the soil in the recess will have time to sink a little. The finished well should be at least 50 centimeters deep and about one meter in diameter. At the bottom of the recess is necessary to place the sod, laid up roots. When the grass rot in the pit, it will become an additional feed for the young tree. From above it is best to fertilize the pit with horse manure or mullein. It is useful to pour a few liters of diluted ash in the water. On top of all the fertilizers laid out the soil dug out of the pit.
If the site is dominated by clayey soil, a hole for the seedling will be dug at least 1.5 meters wide, so that in such soil there is a place for the full development of the roots of the crop.
At the bottom of such a pit, it is necessary to lay expanded clay and sand in order to exclude the probability of root decay during heavy precipitation. A good planting pit will be the key to proper and rapid growth of the young sapling.
The optimal distance between the apple tree and another crop in the garden will be 5 meters, the same distance should be between the rows in case of mass planting of trees. Too frequent planting will lead to the fact that plants will receive less moisture and nutrients from the soil, competing with each other. In addition, the size and taste of the fruit will be significantly reduced.
Rooting of seedlings in the hole is strictly in the center. The plant needs support, so a peg is placed next to the apple tree in order to protect it from being twisted or broken by the wind. The landing pit is covered with soil until an earthen mound forms around the seedling.
However, during the work should take into account the location of the root collar - it should be above the soil level by 3-4 centimeters. At the final stage of planting land need to tamp and water the plant.
Care
As noted above, the variety “Shtrifel” refers to moisture-loving crops, the amount of moisture consumed by them directly determines the yield, external and taste characteristics of fruits. In order to provide the apple tree with moisture, it is necessary to perform several mandatory irrigations in the season. An exemplary work flow is shown below.
- The first watering after rooting young seedlings need in the phase of its flowering.
- Further, the introduction of moisture is carried out when the plant has already formed fruit ovaries. This is the period when they are actively increasing their mass.
- The third watering of the crop is done in the fall. It is important to do this before the cold weather comes. The best time will be October.
The amount of fluid injected is also important. For young seedlings, whose age does not exceed three years, 5 buckets of water will suffice, for an adult plant you will need twice the amount of moisture. Apple tree perfectly tolerates water of any temperature, so it is not prohibited to carry out watering even from a well. You can perform work with a hose. It will be enough to leave it in the circle of the culture for one day, including a small water pressure.
Frequent and surface watering will adversely affect the development of the variety.
This type of apple is characterized by constant growth of green mass, so the plant requires regular pruning. In addition, in the course of planting the seedling in open ground, there is a slight damage to the roots, and the remaining roots will be hard to cope with providing food for a rather large crown. Based on this, pruning the apple tree is needed in the first year after its rooting in the garden. And the work will need to continue until the crown of a tree has completed its formation.
In order to ensure proportional development of the tree, it is necessary to take into account that the trunk in the first years of life is significantly lengthened, therefore it is cut just below the topmost branches.
In addition to the formative works, culture will require sanitary pruning. These activities are reduced to the removal of dry and damaged shoots. If pruning of affected branches was carried out, they should be burned, and garden tools should be treated with disinfectants. Yablone, whose age has exceeded 10 years, needs to be rejuvenated pruning once a season. In addition, you should get rid of too much adjacent branches that grow in the direction of the crown of the tree.
It is best to perform pruning prior to the beginning of the movement of the juices in the culture; February will be the optimum period for the middle band. After shaping the culture, the slices are treated with a garden pitch.
In the first season after planting an apple tree, it will not need additional nutrients. Further, the variety must be at least three times the introduction of fertilizers during one season.
- The first stage of feeding occurs in the spring, in the phase of the appearance of the first sheets. At this time, root dressing is performed with compounds in which nitrogen is present.
- The next stage requires the use of mineral compounds. Work carried out during the flowering culture.
- At the time of the collection of the fruits of its mass is root dressing organic compounds. Quite an effective remedy is an infusion of nettle or dandelion.
The use of green manure plants has a positive effect on the development of culture. In the summer months, it is possible to sow rye around the crop; when the grass reaches a height of 20 centimeters, the ground with the grown plant is dug up.
The final stage of feeding the apple will be its fertilizer mineral composition. Usually work is done at the end of August.
"Streyfling" stands out resistance to diseases, which often affect fruit crops. However, preventive spraying will help prevent crop damage by pests. Good results show the use of infusions of dill or wormwood.
In the mid-latitudes, the preparation for wintering culture is not required, since the variety is distinguished by good resistance to negative temperatures. In the northern latitudes, with the onset of cold weather, young saplings are warmed with organic matter under the cover of the tree trunk.
On the dwarf rootstock root system is at ground level, so in order to avoid freezing it will need to provide additional shelter culture.
Reviews
According to the characteristics that gardeners give to the variety, the tree is notable for its fruits, which have high taste qualities and visual appeal. The overall winter hardiness of the crop makes it possible to grow the plant in areas belonging to high-risk farming regions. However, errors associated with agricultural technology, can lead to lower yields.
