Apple "Anis": description and varieties of the variety, recommendations for agricultural technology
"Anise" is a fairly well-known variety of autumn apples.For the first time it was bred by breeders in the Volga region, but during cultivation many species were obtained, which have both similarities and significant differences.
Variety description
Aniseed apple trees are tall and very sturdy trees. The crown is cone-shaped, with the development gradually rounded, the degree of thickening is average.
Branches and shtamb covered with rough light brown bark, the main branches have an average thickness, grow upwards. Shoots have a slight foliage, sometimes do not have foliage.
Fruits grow on spears, as well as kolchatka branches, which are 3 years or more. The leaves are a bright green shade, slightly glossy, the shape is rounded-elliptical, with a jagged edge along the edges.
"Anise" blooms with light pink flowers, however, in some cases, the bloom is white or, conversely, light red, the buds open quite widely. At the end of the flowering period, the formation of fruits begins, which, as they mature, reach a weight of 100 g. Apples have a characteristic rounded shape, dense skin is rough, has a yellow-green tint with a faint red blush. On a cut milk pulp with almost imperceptible green overflow. The taste is very sweet with a slight sourness, the smell is rich and apple.
Apple trees of this grade differ in good productivity. Fruiting begins only in the fifth year of the plant's life, and in a mature state, with each tree under favorable growing conditions, up to 300 kg of fruit can be obtained.
"Anise" is a long-liver among apple trees. All other representatives of this crop are already considered old by the age of 25 and need to be replaced, and anise at the age of 30 is at the peak of its yield.
There are cases when the age of fruit-bearing trees reached 100 years. However, as the apple grows older, the fruits begin to shrink and become more sour to the taste.
The advantages of the variety include the following characteristics:
- high ecological adaptability;
- long life;
- exceptional fruit flavor;
- frost resistance of the plant;
- increased yield;
- transportability and good keeping quality;
- low tardiness before technical maturity.
However, there are also disadvantages to anise. The first and foremost is that the plant cannot self-pollinate; on the site, by all means, it is necessary to plant several crops so that they can pollinate a friend. In addition, the tree is prone to periodicity of fruiting, and also has poor resistance to powdery mildew and garden rot.
Most often, the variety is grown in the Volga-Vyatka and North-West regions of our country, in addition, it can often be found in the Volga region.
Varieties
Botanists include at least 60 varieties of the species "Anis". Denote the most popular ones.
"Anis Scarlet"
This is the "parent" variety, one of the most common among domestic gardeners. This variety is characterized by its dark red fruits with white juicy pulp. Fruits usually have an average size, are characterized by good keeping quality and withstand long-term transportation. The harvest is regular, quite plentiful.
“Scarlet Anise” is a very undemanding culture that can grow and bear fruit even on poor soils, it can often be found in hilly, as well as mountainous areas.
"Anis Sverdlovsk"
Apple tree, which has received recognition for its winter hardiness and unpretentiousness. The plant is medium thick, the shape of the crown is ovoid.
Fruits differ in small weight, the weight of each fruit is no more than 120 g, the shape of apples is round, the skin color is pale yellow. On the sunny side, as a rule, there is a bright blush. The flesh is quite juicy, uniform, light milky.
The fruits are distinguished by an exceptional presentation, they can withstand long-term transportation and storage.
The only drawback of the variety is attributed to the weak resistance of such an apple infection as scab.
"Anis striped"
The second name for this variety of apples is Anis gray, which is an interesting name for the variety due to its grayish-greenish tint. This plant tolerates frost well and easily withstands drought, so it can be cultivated in various parts of Russia. The apple tree has good immunity to fungal infections of the crop, the yield is very high.
However, unlike all other varieties of Anise, these apples cannot be stored longer than one month, so they are not grown for commercial use.
"Purple Anise"
This is another type of crop, which is characterized by high yield, resistance to external adverse conditions. A distinctive feature of this plant is its large purple fruit with a characteristic scarlet tint.
Landing
When purchasing seedlings is very important to pay special attention to some details.
- Age of planting material - it is optimal to acquire a one or two year old plant.
- Ground part - an annual plant should have no more than 3 branches, even the absence of such branches is allowed, for a two-year-old 4-5 strong, well-formed and upright branches are required. It is necessary to give preference to seedlings with unopened buds or with barely appeared leaf cones - if the leaf plate is fully open, the seedling survival rate will be very low.
- The roots - young plants intended for transplantation into the open ground should have a strong, well-developed root system, if they are open or partially dried - the purchase of such material should be abandoned. At a distance of about 8-10 cm from the root of the neck should be located inoculation.
- The size - plants with a height of 1.2-1.5 meters take root best.
Planting is best done in the fall, about a month before the onset of cold weather, in the central zone of Russia, this corresponds to the first half of October. In the south, people engage in planting a little later, and in Siberia, respectively, earlier. If you plant a sapling right before the onset of the first frost, it will not have time to take root, and in the winter it is more likely to die from prolonged frosts.
"Anis" should be planted in an open, well-lit place without shading, because when there is a lack of lighting the plant develops very poorly and gives little fruit. Due to the unpretentiousness of “Anis”, many people neglect such a stage as the preparation of the planting pit - they just dig a hole right after buying a seedling and plant it. However, if you intend to get the highest yield possible, then it is better to spend some time preparing the land. Do not doubt that in this case the plant will thank you with abundant fruiting and exceptional taste of its fruits.
It is better to prepare a pit for a month and a half before the planned planting; for this, a hole is dug out, filled with black soil mixed with compost, plant residues, humus and mineral fertilizers containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
The pit is regularly watered, so the place where the apple tree will be planted becomes fertile and nourishing for the plant.
If you are planning a spring planting, then the hole should be dug out also in the fall and fill it with organic fertilizers, and in the spring shortly before planting you should be fed with mineral fertilizers.
Directly landing is carried out in accordance with a specific scheme.
- Immediately after purchasing the seedling, it is necessary to wrap its roots with a wet cloth and wrap it with plastic wrap - this will prevent the root system from drying out. A couple of hours before planting, you should soak the roots in cool water, if you wish, you can add a root-stimulator solution to it.
- While the roots are soaked, you must dig a hole 50 cm deep and 120-150 cm wide — you need to place the plant in it so that the root neck 8-10 cm protrudes above the ground surface.If, for any reason, you could not prepare the planting hole in advance, then after planting, plant it with a mixture of black soil, peat, manure, ash, superphosphate and potassium chloride.
- So that the plant does not fall, it will be right to fix the support in the planting hole, and tie a young sapling to it.
- After planting, it should be abundantly moistened with a plant and sprinkled with mulch, which prevents drying out of the soil, and in winter time will help to survive low temperatures. Optimal use of hay, straw, moss, pine needles or sawdust.
Care
One of the main points of proper cultivation of anise is its abundant watering, especially in the first years of the plant’s life, when the root system is at the stage of formation. The first irrigation should be carried out during the flowering of the plant, and then repeated watering every week so that about 20-25 liters of water fall under each tree, on dry days this volume should be increased.
For the successful growth and development of the fruit the plant needs periodic dressings, for this purpose, a solution of rotted manure is used. And also the ready preparations containing all minerals necessary for fruit cultures possess good efficiency. At the flowering stage, organics are used, at the time of formation of the ovaries and the active ripening of fruits, preference is given to superphosphate and potassium salts.
Like all other apple cultures, Anis often encounters common diseases of apple trees.
- Mealy dew - It appears as white bloom, which affects the green parts of the plant, as well as the buds. In the absence of treatment, the disease often leads to rapid drying of the foliage and falling off of the ovaries. When the first signs of infection appear, the plant should be sprayed with “Topaz” and “Scor” compositions.
- Scab - a very common fungal infection, which often occurs with excessive moisture, it affects the leaves and fruits of apple plants and manifests itself as light brown spots on the surface. Spraying with copper-containing preparations - copper sulphate or copper chlorine - has very good efficacy in such problems, however, this should be done before the appearance of buds.
Reviews
Russian gardeners and gardeners everywhere grow "Anis" - it is rare to find a garden in which there is not one of the representatives of this variety of culture. It is not surprising, because the fruits have a rather pleasant sweetish taste with light sour notes, thanks to which they like both adults and kids.
Apples "Anis" are extremely useful because they contain a lot of ascorbic acid, which significantly strengthens the human immune system, as well as increases its resistance to colds and viral diseases.
In addition, "Anis" is characterized by low calorie, so apples of this type can be easily entered into the composition of various diets, as well as recommend to people who are struggling with extra pounds.
Reviews gardeners say that apples of this variety can be eaten raw, cut into fruit salads, used as a filling for sweet pastries. Juicy pulp allows you to extract from the "Anise" a very tasty and nutritious juice, as well as use for making jam, jams and marshmallows.
It attracts gardeners and the simplicity of the plant, its ability to withstand extreme temperatures, as well as too heavy rainfall, or, conversely, their absence.
