Halumi is a type of pickled cheese. The homeland of the product is considered to be Cyprus, where in 1999 cheese was recognized as a national culinary heritage. In the production of Halumi, a mixture of goat’s and sheep’s milk is most often used, but cow’s milk is sometimes added. Traditionally, mint is added to this product, which gives it a special freshness to taste.

Halumi has a special layered texture that allows you to fry the product. As for the taste characteristics, the taste of the product is rather tender, slightly salty. How to cook?

Properly frying Halumi can be in several ways. The simplest method does not require the use of a large number of various ingredients - it will suffice to take the cheese itself and olive oil. Halumi needs to be cut into portion pieces one or one and a half centimeters thick.

Heat the butter in a pan and put the pieces of cheese on it. The product is fried on both sides for no more than one and a half minutes, after which it can be removed from the fire and eaten or used for cooking. In the same way Halumi can be cooked on a grill over an open fire.

Cheese can be fried in a flour breading and served with sauce. To make the sauce, the following ingredients are required:

  • 300 grams of natural white yogurt with a fat content of not more than 10%;
  • two medium cucumbers;
  • two large spoons of lemon juice;
  • salt and black pepper to taste;
  • a bunch of dill greens;
  • one clove of garlic.

To prepare the sauce, chop cucumbers, herbs and garlic finely, season the products with yogurt and lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste. If you prepare the sauce in a blender, then its consistency will be more uniform. Cheese is fried in the same way as described earlier, only crumbling in flour beforehand.

In order for the flour to hold better on Halumi's surface, pieces of cheese should be dipped in a beaten egg, and then rolled in a flour breading.

Where to add?

Grilled cheese can be served as a separate snack, as well as in salads and other dishes. Often, Halumi is served as a sandwich with bread toasts. With grilled cheese there are a large number of simple recipes that even beginners in cooking can cook.

Salad

To prepare the salad, Halumi is cut into small cubes and fried on all sides until golden brown in olive oil. In addition to cheese, the following components are required for cooking:

  • mashed salad;
  • tomatoes;
  • black hammers pepper;
  • vinegar;
  • Pine nuts.

Lettuce leaves are placed on the bottom of the plate, then tomatoes with fried cheese. Products should be poured on top of olive oil and vinegar, sprinkled with nuts, salt and pepper, after which the salad can be served.

With vegetables

Halumi cheese can not only be served with fresh vegetables, but also fried with them in one pan. To prepare such a dish you will need the following products:

  • 350 grams of cheese;
  • 200 grams of eggplant;
  • one bulb medium size;
  • one large tomato;
  • 200 grams of zucchini;
  • salt and black pepper to taste;
  • vegetable oil.

The onion must be cut into half rings, and all other products into medium cubes. First of all, vegetables are laid in a pre-heated pan and fried for about eight minutes.After this time, cheese is added to the vegetables, and the dish is cooked on the fire for another five minutes.

Sandwich

For the preparation of sandwiches with Halumi you can use a variety of combinations of products. It is important that all components harmonize with each other to taste. Cheese goes well with vegetables, lime, salad and other herbs, olives and fresh garlic. In addition to vegetables, you can put cooked smoked or fried bacon in a sandwich.

Useful recommendations

Fried cheese should be consumed hot, so it is not recommended to cook the product in large quantities at once - only the required number of servings. To diversify the fried product, you can experiment with breading. For example, you can add different spices to the flour or use sesame instead.
