Terms of beet planting in Siberia and the Urals
Beet plantations can deliver a lot of tasty and healthy fruits. But in order to meet the expectations, it is necessary not only to carefully select the variety and prepare the soil.It is very important to know about the timing of cultivation in harsh conditions.
Special features
Such a root crop, like beets, is deservedly loved by many gourmets and simply ordinary farmers. The reason is not only in excellent taste characteristics, but also in the significant benefits of the plant. Beet contains:
- fiber, improves digestion;
- potassium;
- antioxidants that slow down the aging process;
- iron, which improves the oxygen supply of organs and tissues;
- Organic acids - the function of each of them is specific and deserves a separate discussion.
According to nutritionists, beetroot helps reduce the likelihood of scurvy. It reduces the manifestations of diabetes and stone kidney disease, the severity of hypertension. The vegetable was placed on the table by the ancient Babylonians. And today it is cultivated in almost all personal areas in Russia.
But to enjoy a pleasant taste and get health benefits, it is required to cultivate the plant strictly according to well-established agronomic norms.
When is it better to plant?
Sowing beets in Siberia and the Urals is quite possible. For this purpose, mainly used seedlings. A similar approach is practiced for early varieties, regardless of the area of growth. The moment of disembarkation is determined by the climate of the region, in any case, the seedlings are planted 21 days before being transferred to free land. Usually this moment comes in April or May.
Planting beets under plastic wrap can be in the last days of April. But you can move it to the open land until the third decade of May. The seedling can be transferred to the free land only after warming it up to +10 degrees.
Even if in a particular year the soil warms up to the desired mark earlier, you should not hurry. It is required to wait for a steady weather, excluding the return of frosts.
Method of work
To planting beets gave a good result, it is not enough to observe the deadlines. It is very important to meet strict technological requirements. Seed material is disinfected in a solution of potassium permanganate (with a significant dilution). After that, it is soaked in water. It is possible to accelerate seed germination by stratifying them 24 hours in cold and ½ hours in warm (exactly 35 degrees) water.
Soil for receiving beet seedlings can be taken in a specialized shop. The choice between mixtures for seedlings and soil for vegetable crops is voluntary. You can also prepare your own substrate using:
- garden land (or turf) - 2 shares;
- sand - 1 share;
- humus (rotten compost) - 2 shares;
- peat - 4 shares.
To 10 kg of this mixture add 1 cup of wood ash. To insure, it is necessary to disinfect the soil. Treatment involves steaming for ½ hour in a water bath. You can disinfect the soil and dry using an oven. Exposure of the soil mixture in the package for 7 days allows you to resume the population of beneficial microorganisms.
Working with seedlings and disembarking her
When taking to sow beet seeds, you need to place them in the ground 10-15 mm deeper than the surface. After that, sprinkle the earth with additional soil, compact it a little and supply it with moisture from a spray bottle. Tanks containing crops should be maintained when the air is heated to at least +20 degrees. A miniature greenhouse helps to prevent the soil from drying out, as well as to accelerate the formation of sprouts. It is formed by covering the blanks with glass or transparent polyethylene.
During the entire period of growing the seedlings, the covering structure is removed for a short time every day, this helps to air the substrate and at the same time control the degree of its moisture. When the beet seedlings reach the seedling stage, it is moved to a well-lit area. At the same time there the air must have a temperature strictly from 14 to 16 degrees of heat. At the time of the appearance of a pair of true leaves of the plant dive. The gap between the bushes make 30-40 mm.
If the root crop was originally planted in isolated pots, the pick may not be made.All the same, as soon as the time comes to replant the beets in the garden, the bushes are divided.
Working in the spring, it is necessary to control the achievement of a soil temperature of +8 degrees not at the surface, but at a depth of 0.1 m. The choice of the most sunny site helps to speed up this condition. In addition to temperature indicators, it is required to take into account the norms of crop rotation.
Beets feel best where they used to grow peppers and cereals, eggplants and tomatoes, cucumbers and onions. But the change of its cabbage, carrots, rapeseed and potatoes increase the likelihood of disease. And it is also unacceptable to produce twice sowing beets on the same site. When preparing the soil for the root, it is necessary to make it loose, providing a weak alkaline or neutral balance. In any season of the year, regardless of the period of planting, it is unacceptable to use fresh manure.
Additional Information
A guarantee of the development of large fruits is the strict observance of the required distances. Thus, the aisles are strictly maintained equal to 250 mm, and the gap of individual plants should be approximately 50 mm. When planting seedlings, any of them leave only 2/3 of the middle root. At 14-21 days of landing cover from direct insolation and frost. Protection is carried out using non-woven materials.
When the period set for the attachment and primary growth of root crops passes, they must be thinned out. At the same time, the distance from one bush to another is assumed to be 0.1 m. Judging by the opinions of experienced gardeners, the land in the garden should be mulched. This helps to keep water in the soil and prevent the expansion of weeds. As a result, the basic cultivation periods characteristic of a particular variety are maintained more clearly.
The moment for planting beets without seedlings comes at a minimum when the air temperature is from +6 degrees. Excessive rush, when it is not expected, leads to the fact that instead of the root will develop tops. Processed seed material is placed in the furrows, previously laid on the beds. The gap between the furrows is a maximum of 300-350 mm. The intervals separating the seeds should be no more than 70 mm, the exact value is determined by the varietal specificity.
Again, it is worth emphasizing: when growing without seedlings, it is impossible to accurately name the period of thinning planting. The right moment comes as soon as a couple of early leaves come out. In this case, the breaks of seedlings are 30-40 mm.
“Excessive” plants are not thrown away, but carefully removed and transferred to other ridges. The term of the second rarefaction occurs when a pair of true leaves occurs, the distance should be 70-100 mm.
Has its features and landing in the winter. It is produced in the last days of October. Normally, seeds are laid 30–40 mm deep, furrows are prepared in advance. Row spacing is exactly 150-200 mm. Powder is produced from above using humus or peat.
Care activities, regardless of any deadlines and moments of disembarkation, include:
- watering;
- weeding;
- loosening the ground;
- prevention of pests and diseases.
Beets should be watered whenever the top soil layer of the bed dries out. The most important thing is to monitor the soil moisture in which young shoots grow. An additional risk factor, of course, is dry and hot weather. Watering is done from above, while not only moistening the ground, but also washing the foliage is achieved. Grown up plants are watered less frequently, introducing on 1 square. m 20-30 l of water, no more, because excessive dampness is also contraindicated.
