De Barao Tomatoes: Characteristics and Types

 De Barao Tomatoes: Characteristics and Types

Most Russian summer residents are well acquainted with the variety of tomatoes "De Barao", which appeared in the 90s of the last century.He immediately gained popularity due to its fruiting period, which lasts throughout the entire planting season, and resistance to most types of pests and diseases of the tomato family.

Special features

“De Barao” is a vegetable crop with a powerful stem and a large number of pointed leaves of dark green color. The plant is indeterminate, so the height of the bush in rare cases can even reach 4 meters. The total number of fruit bearing brushes is about 10, with each giving 5-8 fruits.

Fruiting lasts for a whole season and ends only with the onset of the first frost.

Tomatoes of this variety are cultivated both in closed greenhouses and in the open field. Mass fructification begins about 110 days after sowing seeds, under greenhouse conditions, the harvest ripens 10-15 days earlier.

The shrubs are sredneroslye vegetable, they form quite strong shoots and have elongated internodes.

Inflorescences are very compact and have a simple structure, as a rule, the first of them grows at about 9, 10 or 11 leaves, however, depending on the variety, slight variations can occur.

Each subsequent inflorescence is formed towards the apex with a step of about 2-3 leaves.

The fruits are strong, have an elongated oval shape. The skin is smooth, and its color depends largely on the varietal variety. The most common among gardeners black, red, as well as orange and yellow varieties "De Barao". The weight of each fruit varies from 50 to 85 g. Tomatoes have an original sweet-sour taste, each has two chambers and an impressive amount of seeds. Tomatoes of this type contain a lot of dry substances, the fruits are characterized by high density and resistance to cracking, so the culture tolerates transportation and can be stored for up to 2 months.

At the end of the season, all unripe fruits must be removed and placed in a dark, cool place - they mature quite quickly and can be eaten. "De Barao" is distinguished by resistance to most garden pests and diseases of vegetable crops, including late blight.

The grade belongs to the category frost-resistant. The yield is quite high, up to 40 kg of tomato can be removed from 1 m2 of cultivated area in greenhouse or greenhouse conditions, although this indicator is slightly lower in the open ground, because natural climatic factors influence the formation of the fruit ovary .

Tomatoes of these varieties are often consumed raw, due to the meaty structure of the fruit is included in the composition of salads, sandwiches and cold appetizers. They are used for hot dishes, as well as for winter conservation.

However, "De Barao" can not be used for juice, because its content in the fruits is small.

Benefits

For several decades, domestic breeders constantly bring out new hybrid varieties, which have exceptional taste characteristics and resistance to various natural influences. However, despite the constant appearance of new products, De Barao stably holds the leading positions due to the exceptional taste of its fruits and the simple agrotechnology of their cultivation.

The variety is characterized by a large number of advantages against the background of other types familiar to our consumer:

  • universality of application of the harvested tomato crop;
  • high rates of picking vegetables from 1 square. m square;
  • disease resistance;
  • unpretentious care;
  • visual appeal tomato;
  • balanced amount of pulp and juice;
  • exquisite taste.

disadvantages

This culture does not have any fundamental flaws, however individual consumers point out some difficulties with growing these bushes.

Despite the resistance to the vast majority of diseases, the plant is susceptible to infection with vertex rot and black bacterial spotting, especially with regard to the black varieties “De Barao”.

The plant is not able to resist slugs, and in addition, the bushes are often the object of attack of the Colorado potato beetle.

Vegetable crops may not be grown in all regions of Russia, since planting of this variety is not recommended in areas of high-risk farming due to late ripening periods.

The plant has no limit point of growth, for the season the bushes grow by 3-4 meters, so they need tying. The height of the variety also dictates its requirements for greenhouses and greenhouses - the lights must be high so that the tomatoes can grow and develop normally.

Description of the variety indicates that the plant has some difficulties in the formation - it should have only one stem, in rare cases two, and everything else is stepchildren and leaves that should be regularly removed, otherwise the plant will “work” on the growth of shoots instead of directing all their strength to the formation and maintenance of fruit ripening.

Well, in addition, experts recommend planting tomatoes of all types of variety "De Barao" separately from other tomatoes.

Varieties

"De Barao" is represented in our gardens in several versions, which differ in color and in individual yield parameters. However, they all have a number of common varietal characteristics, namely, indeterminate, tall, and long fruiting.

The black variety is especially popular in private areas and small farms that use film covers. This is a late-ripening variety, which is characterized by increased branching and tallness - the size of a bush often reaches 2 m.

The very first inflorescence appears above the 10-11 leaf. Fruits of an oval form have a saturated violet-brown color. The weight of each tomato is about 60 grams. Tastes pretty good.

From 1 square. m of acreage, you can get up to 8 kg of crop.

Red "De Barao" is another mid-season variety, its fruits are commonly used for canning for the winter and long-term storage, as well as raw for vegetable salads.

The main advantage of the variety can be called its resistance to cool temperatures and high yield even in conditions of shade and partial shade. Fruiting long. Tomato pulp is quite fleshy, the weight of each fruit is 60-70 grams.

Tomatoes are very strong, do not crack during transportation and long retain their taste properties during storage.

Up to 4 kg of tomatoes can be easily picked from each growing bush.

Pink is a variety that, as the name implies, has a characteristic pink color of egg-shaped fruits. The mass of each fruit can be 70 g.

The plant is particularly resistant to late blight, indeterminate bushes, tall and strongly branched.

From 1 m2 of area they collect from 5 to 7 kg of tomatoes, which are distinguished by their density, strength and resistance to cracking during transportation.

“Tsar De Barao” is a variety whose fruits have exceptional taste characteristics. These tomatoes are grown for preservation, as well as eating fresh. The plant is characterized by versatility, endurance to the shade and the adverse effects of low temperatures.

Fruits have an oblong oval shape and raspberry color. The flesh is fleshy and compacted. Fruits are small - their weight varies from 10 to 15 g, but in general, from 1 bush they collect up to 10-15 kg of vegetables.

Yellow (Golden) is a plant that has a slightly elongated growing season, during which time quite tall bushes are formed.

The fruits are large, the weight of each approaching 80 g. Tomatoes are elongated and painted yellow. From each bush collect from 5 to 7 kg of fruit.

The Gigant variety is also popular among summer residents, and its bushes reach 4 meters, and its fruits - 190 grams.

How to plant?

Before you start growing seedlings, you must prepare the purchased seeds for planting. First you need to check them for germination. It is necessary to dissolve in a glass of plain water 1 tbsp. l salt and stir. In the cooked composition need to pour the seeds. Those that float to the surface are rejected - there is no life in them and they are unsuitable for germination.

    The rest of the seed material is immersed for a short time in a bright solution of potassium permanganate for 20-30 minutes, only after this treatment can they be planted.

    Seeds are planted in the prepared land in the last decade of February, In order to get quality seedlings, you need to follow a few rules:

    • the tank must have drainage outlets to remove excess moisture;
    • container should be taken high - optimally, so that its size was at least 10-12 cm.

    Land for germinating seeds should be loose and rich in minerals. It is better to buy ready-made in a specialized shop or to make it yourself, for this you need to mix in equal quantities peat, compost soil and ordinary garden soil.

    Seeds are laid in the recesses at a distance of 1.5-2 cm, then they are sprinkled with a thin layer of earth, sprayed in the drip method and covered with plastic wrap or glass.

    Usually shoots appear 3-6 days after planting. After most of the seeds sprout, glass and film must be removed, and the seedlings grown on the south or southeast side, constantly turning it to the sun on different sides. Picks are made only after the sprouts have 2 true leaves each. Seedlings are transferred to peat cups, where they "reach" to the desired state and size.

    Please note that the cups should also be tall, since the determinant variety and the seedlings have the appropriate dimensions. Shortly before planting in open ground it makes sense to harden the young crops. To this end, they are daily taken out into the open air, gradually increasing the duration of their stay in fresh air from 15 minutes to 2 hours, or they conduct intensive airing of the room in which the seedlings are located.

    Care

    In May, after the threat of night frosts has finally passed, the seedlings can be transferred to open ground. Plant it with a peat cup. On the one hand, this will avoid the stress experienced by plants during transplantation, and on the other, it will enrich the soil with additional nutrients.

    In general, it is quite simple to care for “De Barao” tomatoes, for this you do not need much time and effort. However, sprouts should be monitored, properly watered, loosened and periodically fed.

    Seedlings are planted in open areas or in greenhouses / greenhouses. Depending on the regional climatic parameters, “De Barao” lands either in the middle of May under film shelters, or at the very beginning of summer into the ground without film.

    By the time of disembarkation, a quality seedling should have at least 5 true leaves, and its age should not be less than 2 months. Bushes are planted in a staggered manner with a step of 50x55 cm. Each one should be supplied with stakes, which will be useful later for tying them.

    Phosphorus fertilizer can be added to each well. After planting, the young plant should be plentifully watered with warm water.

    Tomatoes "De Barao" need regular and very abundant watering. For these tomatoes requires 2-3 liters of moisture daily, while the plant must be watered strictly under the root, so that the leaves and stems are not soaked. After watering the land must be plowed.

    During the sowing period, “De Barao” tomatoes need to be fed 3-4 times, best for this purpose universal formulations from the “Baikal - EM-1” series will be suitable.

    The formation of the bush should be carried out in one stem, in the most extreme case - in two. Pasony is very important for varieties of tall type, which is “De Barao”. All unnecessary stepchildren must be promptly removed, and after the appearance of the very first tomatoes, the lowermost leaves must also be cut off, so that no more than eight remain on top of them. During the whole summer and the beginning of autumn it is necessary to remove all the old leaves as the young ones grow.

      Testimonials from experienced gardeners say that the “De Barao” tomato cultivation technology is slightly different from the cultivation methods of other varieties, but at the same time, full compliance with all the requirements of agricultural technology produces a fairly high bright harvest with fleshy fruits of the highest quality.

      Especially appreciated among the hostesses that, regardless of the color of "De Barao", all tomatoes can be used both raw and as part of hot dishes and, of course, for harvesting for the winter.
