How to plant a peach?
Different methods of grafting peach give gardeners the opportunity to increase the yield of trees and even improve the taste of fruits. Technically, this is not as difficult as it may seem, so it is worth considering all the existing options.
Special features
The peach tree is a southern plant, so not all its varieties can take root and bear fruit in the middle lane. That is why it is necessary to inculcate culture. But this is not limited to the benefits of such a procedure. It manifests itself in the following:
- the grafting method contributes to the rejuvenation of the tree and prolongs its life, at the same time increasing the productive period;
- Thanks to this technology, new, better varieties can be produced;
- peach starts to bear fruit faster;
- the quality and quantity of its fruits increases;
- culture adaptation to sub-zero temperatures is improved.
In addition, depending on the type of graft, the tree receives additional positive qualities that are unique to it. Meanwhile, you need to be well aware that this technique should be carried out taking into account important requirements. This is the only way to guarantee the success of the operation.
Dates of the procedure
To successfully plant a plant, you need to choose the most suitable time for this. As a rule, they do it in spring, but pay attention to the climatic conditions of the region. It is necessary to vaccinate when warm weather has settled, and frost is no longer foreseen, which will ensure the normal state of sap flow of the tree, the newly formed buds will not be damaged. Therefore, the best time is from mid-March to the end of April. Especially important is the late implementation of work if the winter was cold and the branches could be frostbite.
Meanwhile, early grafting is allowed in summer in June, the budding is carried out a second time, when a tree is grafted in July with a kidney. Inoculation is done in August, but only in the southern regions, where hot summer weather persists for a long time.
The lowest temperature at which you can perform work - +6 degrees. It is not recommended to do this in the fall - in this case, the graft does not have time to settle down and just freezes when frost occurs.
What cultures are grafted on?
Often, the unsatisfactory result of the procedure is due to the wrong choice of stock. Basically, a peach is grafted onto a plum to increase its cold resistance. However, you need to choose only the hardiest and strongest trees. And there are also options such as:
- it can be planted on an apricot - as a rule, such an operation is successful, and cuttings on a new tree quickly take root;
- nectarine is used to get more tasty and juicy fruits; usually perform the procedure in the summer, but this method works only in the southern regions;
- in warm regions, grafting is carried out using bitter almonds, especially if carbonate soil prevails;
- choosing a yellow cherry plum, you can achieve a variety with strong immunity against various diseases and excellent taste, but you will have to periodically remove the quickly growing growth near the root system in order to evenly develop the aerial part of the plant;
- grafting on a turn or felt cherries is a good option, but this method has its drawbacks - the resulting tree will be short, you will need support devices so that the branches do not break under the weight of ripe fruit.
The stock with medium frost resistance can also be used, but the soil should have a weak acidity and pass air and moisture well. To do this, it is necessary to dilute the soil with any large or solid organic matter - compost, sawdust or sand. If the ground is rocky, it is wiser to use almonds as a stock. Practice shows that It is best to instill nectarines and peaches on peach in summer in August. Usually such manipulations are relevant for warmer climatic regions, which makes it possible to significantly improve the taste characteristics of fruits and greater yields.
There are other advantages of such a relationship - the root system of the culture does not overgrow the overgrowth, thanks to which the crown develops well, the flowering begins, the formation of the ovaries and, in fact, the fruits begin. In addition, the fruits are not subject to drying, and the tree itself has a longer period of active life.
Plant selection rules
Harvest grafts begin in the fall, choosing the strongest and healthiest branches. They are pruned long before the cold days to avoid frostbite. The following main requirements should be considered:
- the diameter of the shoots should be 5 mm, and length - 15 cm;
- optimal is the presence of at least 10 buds;
- branches should be stored at a temperature of +2 degrees (on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator or in the basement);
- pre-graft wrapped in wet material, and then placed in a plastic film - you can not allow their vegetative development before the due time;
- biennial seedlings with a stem thickness not exceeding 10 cm are suitable for stock;
- should pay attention to his condition - he must be strong, healthy and free of defects.
Important! Mature trees 10 years of age and older cannot be planted to graft - the graft can lead to the death of the plant, not to mention the fact that the shoots cannot take root on them.
Grafting methods
Amateur gardeners should learn in advance how to graft a crop and choose the most appropriate option for themselves.
Copulation
In most cases, it is carried out in early spring and is also simple to perform. Copulation includes the following steps:
- a graft and stock of one thickness is selected;
- an incision in the stock is made only after disinfection with an antiseptic;
- a similar incision is performed on the graft near the lower kidney;
- then simply combine both plants with cuttings;
- Then it should be smeared the junction with garden bar and wrap tightly with polyethylene.
Budding
Budding is an equally popular method. It can be carried out in the spring in April at night temperatures not lower than +7 degrees, performing the following steps:
- the bark on the scion shoot is incised in the shape of the letter T;
- together with the base cut the kidney on the stock;
- then it is placed in the recess of the cut;
- then it should be well secured with a bandage or tape.
To rejuvenate the old peach, you can spend a special budding. The technology consists in cutting the supporting branches, after which cooked cuttings are placed under the bark, and they should not touch. The same method can be used to quickly restore a tree after an illness.
How to care for a grafted tree?
It should take at least a month, after which you can remove the bandage imposed on the tree during vaccination. After this, the traditional procedure is the cutting of the cut garden pitch. Even with successful grafting, the viability and fruiting of a peach largely depends on how its maintenance and care will be. The needs of the tree are small, but any necessary work should be carried out in a timely manner, among them are the following:
- watering the grafted peach should be done once every one and a half or two weeks, taking into account the quality of the soil and the weather — about 10–15 liters of water are poured into the near-growing area;
- often young shoots are formed on the vaccination site, which must be removed regularly, otherwise the roots of the plant will develop, not its crown and fruit;
- it is important to periodically inspect the trees and detect the appearance of insects and diseases, it is better to carry out preventive spraying with safe fungicidal and disinfecting preparations.
Important! We must not forget that peaches, grafted on plums, apricots and plum, need increased attention and very careful care, but they also give a rich and high-quality crop.
