Cucumber transplantation subtleties

 Cucumber transplantation subtleties

Cucumbers - a common and demanded vegetable in our country, which is found in every garden. Some, noting the culture's capriciousness, are building greenhouses to get a good early harvest, while others are experimenting with planting in greenhouses on open ground. But all gardeners agree on one thing: in many respects, a decent harvest depends on seedlings and actions aimed at its germination.

Traditionally, cucumber seeds are always sown immediately to their permanent growing place. And recently, gardeners-experimenters began to argue that cucumbers, like tomatoes, may well be previously sprouted in a box on the windowsill at room temperature, and once they reach a certain height they can be transplanted into open ground, which will make it possible to get a really early harvest. This process of germination in one place, suggesting subsequent planting in another, is called a pick. It is worth considering its pros and cons.

Why do you need?

The word "picking", perhaps, will be new for the majority, but its essence is well known to everyone. People who have a cottage or garden plots begin in early spring, when the earth is not warmed up at all, “messing around” with boxes, zemlyamka and seeds (tomatoes, peppers) to pamper yourself as soon as possible with freshly grown vegetables. When in the second half of April or in May the soil warms up to the desired temperature, the seedlings that have already ascended on the windowsill will always be relevant. It only remains to transplant it to another place and, caring for it, you can wait for the harvest.

As noted above, cucumbers are no exception, because they are quite suitable for early sowing and for further transplantation. In addition, experienced gardeners noted that thanks to a dive cucumbers, stopping a little in growth, strengthen the root system.

Pre-germination of seeds is carried out in two ways: either in a common box or in an individual container for each seed (a small cup or a special box available in stores).

Individual seed germination is considered more economical, since it allows for rational use of each seed and saves energy, since it is not necessary to transplant densely planted seedlings.

Well, if the place on the windowsill does not allow to place the boxes for each seed, and the weather conditions contribute to the early planting of seedlings in open ground, it is better to germinate the seeds in a common container for all, and thinning them directly, planting cucumbers in their permanent place. It is only important to be extremely careful when moving with very fragile cucumber roots. Also do not forget that A rather adult seedling will be poorly acclimatized in the open field, or it may even disappear. Probably the most difficult thing in picking cucumbers is to check the relationship between seedlings' readiness for transplantation and the readiness for this of the soil (we are talking about the degree of warming up).

Well, if everything is so difficult and unpredictable, then you can dwell on the traditional method of cultivation, that is, directly into open ground. But this method often presents unpleasant surprises. Relatively early disembarkation or a sudden cold snap can “destroy in the bud” the next harvest. And if the seeds are densely grown, all the same, thinning out, it is necessary to disturb the fragile root system of the culture. Thus, it is possible to dive cucumbers, the main thing is to learn a few simple rules. This method will be justified in regions with a late onset of heat.

Timing

For the successful growth of almost any plant requires light, heat and moisture, available in the required amount in late spring. When well-heated by the sun, the soil is warm and still well-moistened. For this reason, the most important point in the cultivation are properly chosen dates of planting or planting of a particular crop. Especially need capricious cucumbers. It is believed that the best time for planting is May (we are talking about the central and north-central parts of Russia).

If after planting on the street there will be favorable days, then in June it will be possible to admire a flourishing culture. But residents of not all regions can boast of consistently favorable climate regions.

It happens that, for example, with a long spring in May, the soil in the open ground is not yet warming up to the temperature necessary for the growth of cucumbers. In such cases, the seeds stop growing, which will at least cause a late harvest. Here you have to resort to picking.

In order to be able to calculate the time of planting, there is a rule: after the seedlings emerge (which takes about a week), it is necessary to count 20–25 days to strengthen them. By this time at least 3 strong leaves should appear on the seedlings, and the earth should warm up and up to + 15– + 20 degrees 15 centimeters deep. If the weather conditions do not allow the soil to warm up to the required temperature, and the cucumbers sown in a common container have risen densely, then you will have to plant them before the onset of heat in individual cups.

Since this vegetable tolerates replanting very poorly, not so long ago special peat cups were developed, implying planting directly into them, which avoids unnecessary injury to the root system. It should be remembered that in peat cups it is impossible to keep young growth for too long. Here, by the way, there will be a greenhouse or a greenhouse.

How to transplant?

Well prepared for transplanting soil significantly improves crop quality. Before you transplant, you need to dig up the ground well, breaking dry parks of soil. It is also recommended to disinfect it with a solution of manganese about five days before planting (one gram of potassium permanganate is taken per ten-liter bucket of water). And, of course, not to do without fertilizer, as which you can use the slurry.

While preparing the wells, it is not worth getting too deep, because the deeper, the cooler the earth in spring, and even deep-set plants will require excessive watering in the future. Finished holes need to be watered with fertilizer prepared at home, and then it is worthwhile to start planting, after which you can cover the garden bed with mulch, which will help keep the plant warm and moist.

Pulling seedlings out of the ground, you must try not to compress the cucumber roots. Abundant watering before planting will allow you to easily extract both small seedlings and heavily overgrown. Transplantation must be done not in hot and not in windy weather. The most favorable for this is evening time.

If the seedlings reached a height of more than 5 centimeters and has a strong stem on which there are 5 leaves, then it no longer needs additional cover from the weather. Well, if, after weighing all the pros and cons, it was decided to proceed with the picking, then first of all it is necessary to determine its method and you can prepare a suitable container.

Training

As already mentioned, sowing each seed in a separate peat cup will help avoid unnecessary manipulation of the cucumber seedlings. As a rule, this method is resorted to with full confidence in good seed germination and with sufficient space for storing numerous cups. Otherwise, in order not to remain without seedlings, the best option would be to plant all the seeds at once in one pot, and after germination, you can thin them out by planting the strongest seedlings into individual seating places, which are better to use peat cups.

It is not worth buying a large dish for picking, since water usually stagnates in it, causing the young plant's root system to rot. Do not forget to make a few holes at the bottom of the selected dishes so that excess water can flow into the pan under it.

It is very important when transplanting the old dishes to pull the seedlings from the ground, covering the roots, which are strictly prohibited to bare, as this may harm them. Picks can not be carried out, if all the cotyledons are not finished. If for some reason it was not possible to do it in time, then it is necessary to wait for the alignment of newly appeared sheets. Transplanted seedlings should be watered slightly with warm water by spraying.

Although quite high, sprawling seedlings can be watered with a watering can, but strictly under the trunk. Severed seedlings need special care, which consists in regular and moderately abundant watering, in providing good illumination and, of course, you need to ensure that it is not in a draft. As soon as the soil of the open ground warms up to the required temperature, it is worth thinking about planting.

In the greenhouse

Approximately after April 20, it is possible to plan the planting of grown seedlings in the greenhouse, by which time 6–7 well-opened sheets should appear at the plant. The bed must be prepared in advance as described above, about a week before disembarking. Immediately with planting is to take care of the garter. To do this, next to each plant in the ground you need to stick a stick, to which a rope is fixed, fixed, for example, on the roof. If the garter is planned after disembarkation, then sticking the trellis can damage the roots of cucumbers.

Important: for cultivation in the greenhouse it is worth buying hybrid varieties that do not require pollination. If you find lethargy seedlings talking about the disease, treatment or strengthening should be carried out before disembarking, so traumatic cucumbers. For uniform distribution of heat and light, it is recommended to plant cucumbers in a greenhouse in a checkerboard pattern. The temperature regime in the greenhouse must be stable, its drops affect the taste of cucumbers.

During the flowering period, the temperature can vary from +18 to +20 degrees, and with the appearance of the first fruits, it should reach +24 degrees.

In open ground

Open ground involves planting under the film (greenhouse) and without it. In the greenhouse, you can plant cucumbers in the 20th of May, and directly into the open ground - in early June. And in one case, and in the other garden bed is still prepared in advance.

Absolutely any varieties are suitable for the street, from self-pollinating to not requiring pollination. If transplanting to a greenhouse does not require mulch, then it will be more than desirable for street planting at first, since there is a high probability of sudden temperature drops from cold to drought, especially in late May and early June.

It is important for cucumbers in the open field to choose the most sunny place. Since here, unlike the greenhouse, the sun and the light are evenly placed (if there are no high, shading plants near), the seedlings can be placed in the garden not only in a checkerboard pattern.

It is possible to land in any convenient way: in length, in width or to make long ribbon-like beds. The garter is not necessary, as cucumbers winding along the ground will not bear fruit worse.

Common mistakes

Cucumbers are warm and moisture-loving plants, but everything should be in moderation. Due to excessive watering, cucumbers start to ache. In this regard, it can be noted that the leaves are white, the plant is drooping, and if nothing is done, then it will fade completely. And if the foliage has turned yellow, then this is the first sign of a lack of moisture or a lack of fertilizer. To make it easier to establish the cause of the disease, it is worth considering the following errors:

  • with the appearance of scorching sunlight, the plant should not be disclosed, but, on the contrary, covered;
  • the plant must be watered, but not poured; Water caught in the heat on the sheet may cause burns.
