How to grow cucumbers on the trellis in the open field?

In order to get an extensive harvest of tasty cucumbers at the end of the season, it is necessary to correctly go through the planting stage and provide vegetables with proper care.In addition to regular watering and fertilizing, care must be taken to ensure that the vine is properly developed. The most convenient way to do this is with a trellis construction. Keeping cucumbers in a standing position will allow for a short period of time to get a rich harvest.

Special features

Cucumbers on a trellis today, as a rule, are used on open ground, and it is important to choose a flat or slightly inclined section. Usually preferred southern slopes protected from the winds. However, hothouse lanes used to be very popular before. The device looks as follows: a wooden crate or metal wire is fixed to the supporting pillars.

You can also use the grid. The pillars themselves are made of wood, metal or reinforced concrete racks. Their size depends on how tall a cucumber can reach. Usually 50 centimeters of support remain under the ground, and 2 meters above the ground look out. There is a gap of 3 or 4 meters between the pillars. As a rule, the rows of wire on which the plastic mesh is fastened are horizontally tensioned onto the supports.

If there are concerns that the weight of the plant will be excessive, instead of a wire, it is better to use a wooden board.

Trellis can also look like a wooden lattice with cells. The sides of one “window” reach 20 centimeters. Growing on such a support is not difficult, because the process of garter is simplified. The stems are fixed on the support with the help of antennae, stretching upwards. Wooden parts are interconnected with screws and nails.

In general, the trellis of the required size, price and even color can be purchased at a specialty store. But the construction of this design is so simple that it is better to do it yourself. In addition, it will even be possible to save on materials using the vertical pillars on the site, for example, trees or walls. Gardeners with golden hands even use bicycle wheels and metal tubes.

However, it should be noted that the trellis cannot be attached to a metal fence. This design will heat up, which will adversely affect the condition of the cucumber vine.

In general, the shape of the trellis can be anything in accordance with the requirements of the plant and the conditions available. Tapestry-wall is the simplest design. On both sides of the beds poles are driven in, between which the grid or wire is stretched. The round trellis is made of bicycle wheels, as well as sticks.

In the center of the beds is established stable vertical, ideally - a metal tube. The wheels are put on the bottom and on top of it and fixed with washers and screws. This design does not take up much space, is convenient in operation and looks very unusual. If corn grows on the site or sunflower, they are used as a basis for cucumbers. No additional action is required - just plant these cucumbers between crops. As a bonus, sunflower and corn will begin to attract the right insects and protect them from the sun.

If to carry out a trellis from branches, then it is possible to save considerably on purchase of materials. About 20 rods are taken, the thickness of which reaches 1 decimeter, and you can choose a different length. The first branch is stuck to a depth of 10 or 12 centimeters. After 15 centimeters, the second branch is set so that the angle between them is 60 degrees.

The point at which they intersect is connected by wire. One by one all the sticks are installed, and then fixed. The ends of the branches are usually trimmed. From wooden bars it turns out to make a comfortable rectangular trellis. A frame is made, parts of which are fastened in any convenient way, which then will need to be covered with a grid. If the bars are of the same length, the construction will be square.

When installing wooden supports, it is better to treat the parts that will be in the soil with a solution of sodium chloride in gasoline. Usually 200 grams of soda is diluted in a liter of liquid. The upper ends of the support posts should be treated with a 5% solution of copper sulfate. A good idea would be to mount a polyethylene flooring over a trellis to protect plants from precipitation and hot sunlight.

Pros and cons of the trellis method

Most gardeners choose tapestry designs, as they allow us to save the planting from the onset of powdery mildew. If the vine is on the ground, then the pathogen is quickly transferred to it from the soil. Increased humidity allows it to actively grow and develop, and if it is still accompanied by rainy days, then you can generally lose the harvest. When the cucumber is placed on the trellis, it is aired and heated. Fungi and decay cannot overtake the culture, and it can be grown even without the use of chemical solutions.

In addition, the designs save space, the plant is easy to care for, and the time spent collecting cucumbers is significantly reduced. Cucumbers remain clean and do not spoil, lying on the ground.

As already mentioned, the plants do not suffer from many common diseases, are well lit and ventilated. As a result, cucumber lashes develop naturally, and one can expect a bountiful harvest. At the end of the season, trellis is easy to dismantle and store for winter storage. And, of course, cute designs on the site look much more attractive than randomly lying landing. As for the shortcomings, gardeners distinguish only one - it is difficult to build a trellis.

Choosing the right variety

On the trellis, you can grow cucumbers of almost any variety, but it is best to give preference to the Focus, Asterix F1 and Regal F1 varieties. It is recommended to plant and beam cucumbers, because so greatly increases their productivity. If the trellis is installed on open ground, then you need to choose varieties that are not afraid of low temperatures. Of the varieties with enhanced branching, "Annie" and "Petrel" are good, with moderate - "Cheetah" and "Ant", and with limited - "Emelya", "Martha" and "Mill".

Planting and care

If it is decided to grow cucumbers on a trellis, then the bed should be formed so that there is only one or two rows of plantings, and they walked in the center. The scheme is as follows: the distance between the rows in the first case should reach 1.5 meters (on average - 1 meter), and in the second - 60 centimeters. Between the cucumbers themselves need to withstand from 20 to 25 centimeters in the first case, and from 25 to 30 centimeters in the second case.

When the varieties are too branched, the second gap increases to 60 centimeters. If you plant cucumbers too closely, they will start to fight with each other and reduce the amount of harvest. In the greenhouse everything is planted the same way, only the gap between the plants reaches 40 centimeters, and between rows it ranges from 50 to 60 centimeters.

A trellis wire is stretched over each cucumber row or a wooden lath is mounted. The height should reach 2 meters. The gap between the pillars ideally varies from 1.5 to 2 meters. In addition to the top, they stretch two more wires, on which they are to fasten a net or strings for shoots. In this case, 15 and 100 centimeters are counted from the ground. Cucumbers are sown when the soil warms up to +15 degrees.

The holes are pulled out, the depth of which is 5 centimeters, and the seeds are placed in them. At first, the bushes will need to wrap from the cold with a special material - until 6 leaves appear.

When seedlings are used instead of seeds, you need to wait until a couple of leaves appear on it.

The garter begins at about 3 or 4 weeks of growth, as soon as there are 6 leaves on the cucumbers. Correctly tie young shoots, because they have better flexibility than already mature plants.Under the first leaves to be tied up freely, so that cucumbers can easily grow and develop. After the garter should be pinching. The essence of the procedure is that the male flowers are removed tip. It occurs somewhere above the fifth or sixth leaf.

The formation of the bush leads to the fact that the lateral shoots begin to actively develop, in which female fruiting flowers appear. As a result, the yield and taste characteristics of the fruit themselves are improved. Pinching is carried out both in the greenhouse and in the open beds. Antennae, on the contrary, are not removed, because they are necessary for the plant to cling to the trellis.

Shrub to form throughout the growth of cucumbers, because only this way you can achieve high yields. The formation takes place as follows: in the lower zones, at the base of the leaves, the ovaries, flowers, and stepchildren are removed. Side shoots remain, but they pinch properly. The first stepson occurs even before the fifth sheet appears - then all stepchildren are removed. From the sixth to the ninth leaf, all stepchildren are also removed, and then the first is left.

But it should also be mentioned that when the main cucumber stalk reaches the top of the trellis, it should be carefully directed downwards.

If the temperature drops, then a nonwoven cover is placed on the trellis. In addition, initially the support should be installed so that the wind could not shake the structure. Vegetables are poured in the evening on open ground and in the morning in a greenhouse. It is best to give preference to watering cans with a spray - this method will not spoil the root system and not disrupt the structure of the soil. Watering is carried out at the root, so that water does not fall on the vine itself.

On cold days, the amount of irrigation water is reduced, otherwise excessive moisture will lead to the appearance of rot. Do not forget about feeding, which are carried out in the usual way. The first occurs when the plant blooms, and all of the following - in fourteen days. In general, for the season fertilizers are applied from five to six times.

It is important to mention that the soil between the trellis is mulched with straw, sawdust, or grass, to prevent moisture from leaving the ground.

Garter

To tie cucumbers to the trellis, you will need to use cords or long bundles. The technology is such that it is necessary to control the process regularly - every three days, an enlarged stalk is wrapped around the garter, trying not to injure a young plant. You can tie a vine on a synthetic twine or another strong and elastic material. The cords themselves join the trellis so as to hold heavy cucumbers, but at the end of the season or, if necessary, easily untied. First, the support is connected to the rope, and then the plant is already tied to it.
