Cucumber "Connie F1": description and cultivation
Cucumber - quite a popular vegetable, which is eaten both fresh and pickled or canned.Today there are quite a few varieties of culture, where hybrids occupy a separate category. In good standing among the vegetables obtained by crossing, takes a cucumber "Connie F1".
Characteristic variety
The choice of a particular cucumber variety for cultivation depends on the individual preferences of the gardener, his experience, opinions about the crop, as well as the climatic conditions of the region in which the planting is planned.
In the northern regions belonging to the zones of risky farming, most often engaged in the cultivation of hybrid plants, whose characteristics are not inferior to other varieties, and in some matters even have tangible advantages, which causes their demand.
Cucumber was introduced to Europe from India, in its homeland and to this day you can find wild crops, but in our country, however, the emphasis is on growing the plant for human consumption. Cucumber "Connie" are considered the best representatives of the F1 group. Often people who do not have relevant information about the culture mistakenly classify the plant as a genetically modified crop. But such opinions are wrong, since the plant belongs to the category of heterotic hybrids.
The appearance of Connie F1 cucumbers takes place in the course of work on the crossing of two maternal cultures with dominant characteristics. Most often, crops are used to produce the product, where one plant has high yields as the main quality, and precocity in the second. The result of the work is the emergence of a hybrid, which took over these two characteristics.
The stem of this plant has no growth restrictions, the foliage of the bushes is notable for its average size and crenate edge. Culture is allowed to cultivate in a greenhouse or on the site.
Hybrids of hybrid reach their technical ripeness on the 50th day after the sprouting of seedlings. The vegetable is quite juicy and crispy, has a cylindrical shape. The size of cucumbers varies within 7-9 centimeters, the mass of one vegetable, as a rule, does not exceed 100 grams. Zelentsy are formed with tubercles and minimal pubescence.
The variety is not prone to overgrowth, therefore Late harvesting of greens will not damage the crop. "Connie F1" refers to parthenocarpic plants, so a stable and high yield of vegetables when growing a hybrid can be obtained regardless of weather conditions and pollination of the crop. At the bushes in each node is formed from three to nine ovaries, the harvest volumes average about 9 kilograms from one square meter of the bed.
As for taste, cucumbers are absolutely not bitter, which is one of the advantages of culture, which determines its popularity among private gardeners.
The advantages and disadvantages of a hybrid
An important point when choosing a cucumber variety for further cultivation is the determination of the positive and negative characteristics of the crop. Therefore, the strengths of the hybrid should be noted:
- "Connie F1" is immune to root rot and powdery mildew, which facilitates further work on the care of the plant;
- plant tolerates temperature fluctuations;
- unlike other varieties, this crop is distinguished by a long fruiting phase;
- vegetables are notable for their high palatability, where the main factor is the lack of bitterness in the taste;
- the hybrid does not contain internal voids, which positively affects the consumer attractiveness of the greens;
- the plant demonstrates good yield, as practice shows, in the open ground from 1 m2 you can collect about 10 kilograms of vegetables, the same performance for plants grown in greenhouse conditions, which are about 14 kilograms;
- vegetables have a universal purpose, so they can be consumed fresh or used for canning;
- the culture is characterized by the beam type of fruiting;
- Harvest "Connie F1" has good keeping quality.
However, all of the above characteristics of the culture demonstrates only under the condition of well-planned and conducted agricultural practices.
Some features of the hybrid vegetable culture can be attributed to the minuses of the plant:
- for gardeners who have previously cultivated large-sized Zelentsi, there are observations regarding their appearance, namely: the presence of white thorns and small tubercles;
- based on the modest size of greens, there are assumptions about the relatively low yield of the crop as a whole, which is not true with proper care of the bushes;
- the high cost of planting material can also be attributed to the disadvantages of the plant;
- since the variety is parthenocarpic, seeds collected from the fruit will be completely unsuitable for planting and breeding.
Sowing seeds
Works on sowing hybrid seeds should be carried out in the first weeks of April. A more accurate adjustment of the planting date will be made on the basis of the location for the subsequent cultivation of cucumber and climatic features. Before planting, the material is pre-soaked in water. For this it is worth using warm thawed or rain liquid. Seeds are left in damp rags until they hatch. As a rule, this occurs within 2-3 days. However, in order to avoid mistakes, the planting material should be soaked only in room temperature water; the optimal value will be the indicator + 26С.
An additional advantage that guarantees the quick emergence of young plants will be the treatment of seeds as a growth stimulator.
When the seeds hatch, they are planted in a light and fertile soil, to deepen the grain into the ground is at a depth of no more than 1.5 centimeters. Comfortable air temperature in the room where the container with plants will be located is the indicator + 24С, at night it should not drop to more than + 16С. For seedlings you need to choose a place without drafts, providing additional lighting will have a positive effect on the development of young bushes.
At home, each seed must be grown in a separate container to ensure that the culture can properly form the root system. As a container for cucumber seedlings, you can use small pots or cups made of plastic.
More experienced growers are engaged in breeding seedling material of the variety "Connie F1" in the greenhouse, on a specially designated bed for this purpose. This option requires additional shelter for young plants at night with lower air temperatures.
The period of growing seedlings is about 21 days, with longer cultivation, it outgrows. Usually, 2-3-week-old bushes are transplanted into open or closed ground for further development.
It is necessary to choose the right place for planting hybrids. The site should be well lit, but direct sunlight should be avoided, it is best that most cultures were in partial shade for 24 hours.
Planting cucumbers in the same place should be abandoned, and the neighborhood with pumpkin, watermelons or zucchini will also have a negative impact on the development and yield of the variety. Tomatoes, radish or cabbage will be the best predecessors for Zelentsi. Planting of seeds or seedlings should occur only after the night frost stops. Best of all, the soil at the time of landing warmed up to at least + 12C. Planting scheme involves placing no more than two plants per square meter plot.
For planting hybrids, you must first prepare a bed. For these purposes, the top layer of the earth is removed from it, then the ground is covered with a mixture consisting of peat, straw and needles sawdust. Humus or manure will act as the middle layer.The uppermost layer will be the previously removed soil, from which it is necessary to remove weeds and loosen.
The technology of planting seedlings in the garden is as follows:
- prepared bed must be moistened and covered with foil;
- after two days, planting holes are being prepared for plants, which are also watered;
- seedlings are planted in the hole, for several days the culture will undergo the process of adaptation, so it is worth temporarily abandoning its watering.
Planting seeds in open ground is as follows:
- the bed is moistened with hot water, then fertilizers are introduced into the ground;
- grooves are formed in the ground, into which planting material is deepened;
- from above the seeds are sprinkled with soil, and the bed is covered with foil for 5 days;
- in the period of formation of the first leaflets it is necessary to perform the hilling of crops
Planting seeds in a greenhouse is as follows:
- planting material is soaked in potassium permanganate for a couple of hours;
- dry seeds are laid out on paper and processed by "Trichodermin";
- for optimal formation of the bush in a staggered manner, planting holes are created;
- they are moistened, then the seeds go deep into the soil.
Seedlings are planted in the greenhouse in the following sequence:
- the wells, like those for seeds, are dug in a staggered manner, the size should be about the same as the volume of the container in which the seedlings grew;
- liquid fertilizer is introduced into the wells;
- further they deepen the culture.
Care
After planting a hybrid variety, it is necessary to ensure that it is properly cared for. With regard to planted bushes directly on the site, agrotechnical measures include mandatory steps.
- Young cultures need to provide reliable protection from the wind. For these purposes, it is recommended to grow a variety on a trellis to allow the plant to curl.
- Watering is recommended to carry out early in the morning or to postpone work in the evening, after sunset. The optimal frequency of watering will be the daily introduction of moisture. However, the ground must have time to partially dry out. Pay special attention to moisture should be in the formation of greenhouses.
- Plants need weekly weeding and loosening the soil to remove weeds and normalize air exchange in the soil.
Taking into account the specificity of the variety, the culture does not need insect pollinators and their attraction.
Caring for greenhouse cucumbers requires several activities.
- Maintaining the optimum air temperature in the room and airing is considered mandatory during the entire period of growing the hybrid. It is necessary to avoid increasing the temperature and high illumination of cultures in the structure. To reduce the performance of the thermometer, you can spray the walls of the room with chalk solution. This method will allow to slightly disperse the sun rays entering the greenhouse.
- It is recommended to provide good air humidity inside the greenhouse, for cucumbers the optimal value will be the rate of 90%. Spraying and watering will control and adjust this indicator.
- Watering of greenhouse crops is carried out with warm settled water at least 2 times a week. It is necessary to avoid excessive soil moisture, so the irrigation schedule should be adjusted to the climatic conditions at one time or another. A large amount of moisture can cause infection of the roots. The amount of moisture is determined based on the location of the roots. As a rule, the roots of cucumbers go deeper into the ground by no more than three centimeters, so the optimum number will be three liters per square meter of beds. However, it should be borne in mind that in the fruiting phase, the deepening of the roots is about 15 centimeters, respectively, and the amount of watering must be increased.
- In order for the moisture in the proper amount to reach the root system of plants, it is necessary to regularly loosen the earth.For the first time after planting, these works need to be carried out after 2-3 weeks. It is necessary to use garden tools near the plants with extreme caution so as not to hook the roots. Subsequent work should be carried out as needed, taking into account the tamping of the land on the garden bed.
Near strongly overgrown bushes you need to work with pitchforks, this will positively affect soil aeration, as well as increase the overall crop yield.
The advantages of greenhouse cultivation of hybrid cucumber culture in a protected area include the possibility of increasing the speed of fruit formation. For these purposes, the carbon dioxide content is being increased. An effective tool in this case will be the location in the container with manure and water, where the mixture will ferment.
