The effect of coffee on the vessels
Everyone knows this drink as a source of vigor and energy, and some use it instead of medicine with a decrease in pressure and weakness.The most interesting thing is that this tradition is accepted as an axiom, but in fact very few people know that coffee contains a huge number of different elements that can have a radially opposite effect on the vessels. Therefore, it is not always unambiguous that an organism reacts to the intake of this flavored drink.
Even experts have not completely figured out what effect coffee has on vessels - whether it strengthens, cleans, or destroys. Consider the facts that have already been proven for sure.
Vasodilator action
The main place among the elements that are contained in coffee is caffeine. Just its impact causes the expansion of blood vessels in many organs and systems, including:
- a heart;
- muscle corset;
- the kidneys.
Such an effect does not always negatively affect their work, but on the contrary - improves blood supply, leading only to positive consequences.
In the case of the heart, the expansion of the vessels causes responses that have a beneficial effect on the work of the entire system:
- increased blood flow to the heart muscle;
- increases endurance of the body during exercise;
- stenocardial pain syndrome is warned;
- the blood flow of weak areas affected by atherosclerosis is activated.
For the skeletal muscular system, the intake of coffee leads to the following changes:
- muscles are saturated with blood, their tone increases, they are saturated with oxygen;
- muscle metabolism is more active, due to which they accumulate faster accumulated lactic acid;
- restores the integrity of muscle fibers;
- increased muscle contractility.
The kidneys and lung tissue are also saturated with blood, thereby stimulating their more active work. Because of the reception of coffee increases urine output, and the lungs supply all body systems with oxygen more actively.
Vasoconstrictor effect
Even one drunk cup of coffee constricts blood vessels in certain places, while in others it expands. Where there is an increase in the volume of vessels, we figured out, now it is worth considering the vasoconstrictor effect.
In the abdominal organs from caffeine, the vessels narrow. This has a positive effect on digestion: abundant juice production starts in the stomach, which contributes to the active splitting of food, but the intestinal motility slows down, causing the food to move more slowly, allowing for more intensive and thorough removal of all useful substances from it.
It is well known that a coffee drink reduces drowsiness, helps to increase concentration and efficiency. All this is possible due to the fact that after the entry of caffeine into the brain, the vessels in it narrow, which activates its various sections. Also, with narrowed vessels, the brain requires much less oxygen to work effectively. From this, drinking coffee in small and stuffy offices is sometimes necessary.
Coffee is able to act as a medicine during migraine attacks or headaches (if they are vascular in nature and are associated with low blood pressure). Most often, the painful sensations in the frontal and temporal lobes of the head are associated precisely with the expansion of the vessels, which, with increasing volume, press their walls against the nerve endings. A small dose of caffeine makes vessels smaller, constricting them, and relieves excruciating pain.
It is also worth noting that the vasoconstrictor effect of coffee is directly related to why the heart sometimes “jumps out” from it. The mechanism of action is the following: after caffeine enters the body and the brain's response starts, the pituitary gland is launched, which, for the reverse expansion of blood vessels, releases many hormones that are transformed by the adrenal glands into adrenaline.
The influence of the latter is well known: pupil dilation, rapid heartbeat, muscle contraction, and the body’s full combat readiness to flee or defend itself.
Daily rate
Fans of the aromatic drink often have to deal with the admonition of others that drinking a lot of coffee means harming health. And not to be unfounded, it is worth exploring in detail how much coffee can be harmful to health.
A dangerous dose that will be fatal is 10 grams of caffeine. To understand how much it is in milliliters, you need to know what kind of coffee-containing drink we are talking about, because the level of caffeine in lattes and espresso is significantly different. Even if we take from the extreme to the extreme, then it is 10-30 liters of liquid, so it is hard enough to die from coffee.
The recommended amount of coffee drunk per day is from 4 to 6 cups (the average cup is 150 ml). Such a volume of invigorating potion will allow you to remain in good shape, not denying yourself the pleasure and not harming your health. Of course, the number of containers with a hot drink is reduced to a smaller figure if you drink very strong varieties, because the strength of the drink is directly proportional to the level of caffeine in it.
Large coffee lovers who are able to drink it in large volumes should dilute the finished drink with cream or milk. This combination reduces the level of caffeine, and then the number of mugs per day can be increased.
If, for medical reasons, the use of fragrant grains is contraindicated, then you should not delude yourself that non-caffeine products will help to cope with the favorite drink. These foods still contain a very small dose of caffeine, which can be detrimental if this component is banned.
Indications and Contraindications
Coffee is a rather unique and highly controversial product. Therefore, along with contraindications to its use, there are convincing indications, when even doctors recommend to drink a certain amount of invigorating drink.
So, when is it still possible (and even necessary) to drink coffee:
- hypotension;
- one day after an intense workout;
- during migraine attacks;
- with slight swelling;
- during painful critical days;
- if necessary, remove drowsiness and increase concentration;
- to increase the productivity of labor (physical and mental).
Be careful, because a qualified doctor, before giving an appointment to use coffee systematically as a medicine, is obliged to check a number of tests that will exclude the possibility of the development of negative consequences from such pseudo-treatment.
For some categories of people, coffee is not completely excluded, but it is allowed to use it only in very small doses (no more than a cup per day). These include:
- pregnant women (stage 2-3 trimester), and in the first trimester it is better to categorically refrain from this fragrant warming drink;
- mild hypertensive patients (when the pressure does not exceed 140/90);
- people with a very mobile and highly excitable nervous system, suffering from sleep disorders.
As you can see, the use of this “bitter tea” should be treated with full responsibility and caution. It is forbidden, even in the smallest doses, to drink coffee:
- small children under the age of 12;
- older people over 75;
- lactating mothers;
- hypertensive patients;
- in the presence of existing diseases with impaired blood flow in the heart or brain;
- people with unstable heart rate;
- in kidney disease, when there is an increased urine excretion;
- in chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract of the type of ulcer or gastritis, especially in the period of exacerbation;
- in the presence of pathologically dilated vessels;
- patients with atherosclerosis;
- after any surgical interventions on the heart, brain, or vessels (about two weeks after surgery);
- after traumatic brain injury;
- people with glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure).
Possible side effects
The uniqueness of nature lies in the fact that it has never yet created two organisms that are identical with each other, which is why all the norms and rules are reduced to an average value, and there are always exceptions. Therefore, side effects that arise from too low a dose of caffeine are less common than overdose with this substance. There are also cases when the average doses are exceeded several times, without causing a negative response.
Classic negative reactions to drinking coffee:
- unreasonable anxiety;
- insomnia;
- excessive agitation;
- increased or decreased heart rate;
- a strong increase in blood pressure;
- stomach ache;
- nausea and vomiting;
- constipation;
- labored breathing.
To use this flavored drink only in pleasure, you need to drink only a quality product and carefully follow the dosage, taking into account the individual characteristics of the body.
