This drink is also called frappe or ice coffee. The name "frappe" comes from the French frappé - "beat, bang", and the second name contains the English word ice, which translates as "ice".
History of origin
For the first time, cold coffee was prepared by Greek Dimitrios Vakdios. When once again he was going to enjoy a cup of this refreshing drink during the lunch break, he did not find hot water and decided to use cold water instead. Later, the Greek recipe changed a bit, and several ice cubes were added to the drink. For the first time, frappe was presented at the International Trade Fair in the city of Thessaloniki in Greece in 1957 by the representative of the company Nestle Yannis Dritsas, whose subordinate was Dimitrios Vakondios, the discoverer of an unusual recipe.
In the US, a similar drink is called frappuccino. It was first cooked in Massachusetts in 1994. Frappuccino differs from frappe only in that ice cream is added to it. This drink also has many fans and is a great success. And this is not surprising, because ice cream gives a special piquancy to the coffee taste.
The secrets of making delicious coffee
As a basis for a drink, it is better to use 100% arabica or a mixture of arabica and robusta. Robusta in its pure form is suitable for fans of bitterness and more astringent taste, while arabica adds velvety softness to the drink.
It is also worth considering that the caffeine content in Robusta is almost 2 times higher than in Arabica.
It is preferable to use finely ground coffee. Moreover, it is important that the coffee was freshly ground. This will allow you to enjoy the pronounced taste and unique aroma. And, on the contrary, the longer the ground coffee will be stored, the less saturated its taste will become.
One of the most common and popular methods of making coffee is cooking in the Turk. This device has a narrow neck, a wide bottom and a long handle. It is preferable to use a copper Turk, the inner side of which is covered with silver, but any other that you are accustomed to use will do. The main thing is to prevent the drink from boiling during cooking, and a few seconds before that, you have time to remove the Turk from the fire.
Water should be clean and soft (purified by filtration, bottled or distilled). Drink a frappe of clear glass goblets or large glasses. Often this uses a straw for a cocktail. Transparent glasses also allow you to enjoy the aesthetic look of the drink, to look at melting ice crystals, which are buried in coffee and cream.
