Terms of planting and features of growing carrots in the Urals
Carrots are grown in all regions of our immense country. Is no exception for this famous root and Ural.However, in this geographic area there are some cultivation features based on the local climate and soil condition. Depending on these factors, the timing of planting, the specificity of care, the choice of seeds and other important aspects are determined, compliance with which is necessary to obtain a rich harvest.
Choosing a grade
Not all varieties of carrots on the market are suitable for the Ural areas. Typically, preference is given to Russian varieties and their hybrids, which were derived for a particular region. They share the ability to show significant growth with temperature fluctuations. These cultures include:
- Viking;
- Samson;
- Napoli F1;
- Alenka;
- Kinby;
- Chance;
- Leander
Judging by the reviews, domestic varieties have the best taste and ability for long-term storage, in contrast to foreign ones.
When choosing a variety, it should be remembered that different types of carrots have different characteristics. Therefore, if it is required that the root crop is kept throughout the winter, imported varieties will not work - they are only suitable for quick implementation.
Some cultures, by contrast, have a long shelf life, but they need to be sown on later dates. If you want to get vegetables of unusual shape, you will have to carefully read the description of the varieties. Preference is given to those who have a purple skin, round shape, nutty smell or lack of a core. Finally, one should always strive to acquire a variety that is as resistant to diseases as possible and is not subject to cracking.
Variety selection also depends on how early the harvest is required. If speed is important, the Alenka, Paris Cartel and Dragon varieties are used. They will not be able to be stored for a long time, however, they will give root crops within three months after germination. Cases of the onset of fruiting after 50 days have been recorded.
If the average time is allowed, then you should pay attention to the versions "Samson", "Shantane", "Viking" and "Altair". Their growing season varies from 105 to 125 days, and they can be stored for six months. Finally, when priority is given to the long winter storage of the crop, the varieties “Nuance”, “Perfection”, “Moscow Winter” are selected. They will ripen up to 140 days, but they will be consumed even in spring.
When is it better to plant?
The time when planting carrots in the Urals goes best depends on the specific territory. Since the length of this region reaches 2.5 thousand kilometers, the climate at different points is noticeably different, and therefore the timing changes. But, in general, it can be noted that the weather in the Urals often changes, and precipitation is distributed rather unevenly. Of course, garden work begins in spring, but the exact time of planting carrots depends on whether the soil is warmed.
As soon as its temperature reaches 8 degrees Celsius, you can think about transferring carrot seeds to the beds. Usually "day X" comes from the end of April to mid-May.
If spring does not come to the region for a long time, then you have to wait for comfortable weather - on average, +13 during the day and +7 at night. The minimum temperature at which the landing is carried out is 5 degrees Celsius. In the case when the grains are placed in the unheated soil, the process of sprout growth slows down considerably. Speaking of individual regions of the Urals, we can distinguish the following pattern.
- Temperatures in the Southern Urals, as a rule, are comfortable, so you can sow the seeds in the middle of spring.
- In the Middle Urals, sowing takes place in May, both at the beginning and at the end. It is important to wait for the moment when all the snow melts.
- In the cold Northern Urals, planting carrots will only happen at the end of May.
With the landing, it is still impossible to delay, because when the earth warms up already to 10 degrees of heat, parasites begin to appear in it, which can cause irreparable harm to still weak roots.But if the carrots are planted too late, arrows will appear, and the root system will not develop at all.
There are rare situations when a gardener decides to plant carrots in the fall — this happens after the soil temperature reaches 7 degrees Celsius. Otherwise, sprouts will appear in the heated soil, which will freeze as soon as the cold comes. All this is done to obtain the earliest harvest, which will appear two weeks before the spring sowing. However, it should be recognized that this method is not very suitable for the Urals, because the winter months are quite frosty here.
Ways
There are several ways to sow carrots in the open field. In the simplest and most usual case, seeds from the store are used. They are presoaked, hardened and processed by growth hormones, and then placed on a bed with lateral holes. Sometimes the seed is mixed with sand or seeds of lettuce or radish - this simplifies the process.
The depth of the wells reaches 3 centimeters, and the gap between them is 10 centimeters. If the weather is warm, then after a couple of weeks you can expect the first shoots. The relative disadvantage of this method is the need for thinning, which, in turn, attracts the smell of carrot flies to the smell of tops. Therefore, planting will need to be protected from pests, covering the special material.
The next method is sowing granular seeds. It is easier to carry out the procedure itself (it is important to observe a gap of 5 to 10 centimeters between the granules), but it will have to be repeated twice, because not all the seeds will eventually come up. In addition, the granules can not be further treated with solutions that accelerate the growth of carrots. The first shoots will appear later than in the first case, and they will have to be watered regularly. It will be useful and the procedure mulch, preserving moisture. Root vegetables are quite large, but their taste characteristics leave much to be desired.
The third method of sowing is called joint planting - carrots are sent to the beds along with onions and garlic. A significant advantage is the fact that the substances secreted by the "neighbors" will scare away the carrot flies. However, there may be a problem when harvesting - onions and garlic can not be watered for several days before ripening, but the carrots at this point are watering.
Therefore, organizing a bed, it is better to initially divide it into two parts. At the top will be located onions and garlic, and at the bottom - carrots.
Growing tips
In order to grow carrots safely in the Ural region, it is necessary to prepare well the seeds and the beds. The main objective of the events held with the planting material is to accelerate the process of emergence of shoots.
- The grains in a linen bag can be buried in the soil and left there for two weeks. The depth of the pit should be 30 centimeters. After they are dug and dried to flowability. As a result, the seeds are abundantly moistened and sprout in 5 days after sowing.
- bubbling is carried out whenever possible. This procedure consists in placing the seeds in a can with an aquarium compressor. The material is saturated with moisture and moves all the time due to the influence of oxygen. At the end, the seeds get out of the water, take cover in wet gauze and, in this condition, are put in a refrigerator for 5 days.
- You can soak the grains in water with useful substances. For example, wood ash or sodium humate. Adding aloe juice or purchased growth stimulants will work well. Some gardeners practice warming - placing the seeds in water heated to 52 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes and then in cold liquid. An alternative to this technique is hardening.
Finally, in the Urals, experts in the field of gardening advised to acquire seed in the form of pellets.
As for the beds, there is a standard treatment - feeding and digging the soil, getting rid of stones and weeds.All this usually happens in the fall. Under no circumstances should fresh manure be used during fertilization. Carrots do not like this dressing, because it negatively affects the condition of the whole plant. The structure and appearance of the roots deteriorates, the roots lose their taste and long-term storage capacity.
In spring, the soil is again dug up and the beds are formed. It is important not to forget that in the Middle Urals, as well as in the Northern Urals, groundwater flows quite close to the surface. In this case, you need to increase the height of the beds - it should reach about 40 centimeters. The recommended width is 1 meter. In the southern Urals, the optimal height is slightly less - 30 centimeters, and the width is 70 centimeters. When choosing a place for planting, it should be remembered that the Urals is a region not too sunny, and carrots need light. Therefore, the beds should be as bright as possible.
The main component of care is watering. In the absence of heavy rainfall, this should be done a couple of times a week, and when root crops start to form, they should be reduced to once and increased in volume. Immediately before harvesting, watering stops.
It is recommended to carry out the process of loosening the soil, as it allows oxygen to be supplied to carrot root crops. In addition, weeding will help scare off pests, prevent diseases and increase plant growth. If the carrots were not planted in granules, then thinning should be done.
