Features and application of camelina oil
Since childhood, everyone knows about sunflower oil and widely use it in everyday food.In recent years, olive oil has become popular, and corn and flaxseed can be found on the shelves of supermarkets. But about camelina oil, many of us do not know anything, and do not even know about its existence, although recently it has begun to appear on the shelves.
What it is?
Hay oil was produced and used by our distant predecessors, until they discovered the properties of sunflower as an oil plant. Cheaper sunflower oil at a lower cost replaced the camelina oil, and its range of consumption has narrowed down to healthy food and vegetarian supporters.
Gingerbread oil is made from the seeds of Shrovetide culture, called ginger. Camelina (lat.) Or camelina is a grassy annual crop of the cabbage genus.
In our country, there are 2 types of camelina: small-fruited flaxseed and sown. It is the seed and is the Shrovetide culture, from which produce camelina oil.
After flowering pods are formed with small brown seeds that have an orange-red shade, for which the plant bears this name - “camelina”. It is from these seeds that the oil is obtained without using other parts of the culture.
Oil is produced by two methods: cold pressed and hot. Cold pressing is the first phase of obtaining oil in a volume of about 20%. Cold pressing oil retains more beneficial properties. Unrefined oil has a beautiful golden color and a pleasant smell. The taste of this vegetable oil has a characteristic sharp, very similar to sesame oil or radish taste.
The second stage - the raw material remaining after cold pressing is subjected to heating, is secondarily wrung out and another 8% of product is obtained. Hot-pressed oil has a lighter taste with a hint of walnut, and the color is darker. This oil containing impurities after heat treatment is purified (refined) from them.
Unrefined camelina product has unique properties. They consist in a high content of omega-3 and 6 polyunsaturated acids in the form of linolenic (about 39%) and linoleic (about 18%) acids, the so-called essential fatty acids. These acids are not produced in the human body, and can get into it only with food.
Fatty acids of the Omega-9 group (oleic acid) are also present, but there are not so many of them.
The vitamin series is also widely represented: retinol (vitamin A), calciferol (vitamin D), vitamin K, and vitamin E, it contains the most. Mineral elements are phosphorus, iron, calcium and potassium, and are especially rich in magnesium.
It also includes biologically active elements, such as:
- phytosterols that prevent cholesterol from entering blood vessels;
- phospholipids that have a healing effect and improve the functioning of the liver;
- chlorophyll, which has wound healing properties.
These substances contribute to the activation of fat and carbohydrate metabolism. The oil also has antioxidants (in the form of carotenoids) and amino acids, which are an integral part of the proteins needed by the body.

In flaxseed vitamin composition, in addition to the elements E, K and retinol (vitamin A), also contains vitamins B - 1-4, 6, 9, and in camelina they are not. Minerals are represented by zinc, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and iron.
However, the oxidation of flax product is faster than camelina, and therefore its components are unstable. In terms of its effects on the body, these oils have similar and distinctive abilities.
Their equal impact is manifested in the following:
- flax seed takes part in metabolic processes, normalizing them;

- Its composition is almost completely absent mineral salts, it does not contain calcium.
- Although its seeds contain many vitamins and minerals, they are not stored in the oil after the pressing process. It has only vitamins E, K.
- He has a different ratio of fatty acids of the Omega group.
The composition determines its properties:

The mineral composition is characterized by a high content of phosphorus, magnesium and potassium, followed by sodium and calcium, and least of all zinc, iron, manganese.
The vitamin complex includes almost all vitamins B - 1-3 (PP), 6. It also has vitamins D, F, E. Vitamin E is more than others, and compared to olive and fish oil, the content of vitamin B-3 (PP) exceeds them, respectively, 5 and 3 times.
