Schemes and methods of planting onion sets in the spring
Onions - one of the most common crops in our gardens.It is grown to be added to various dishes, salted, consumed fresh or stored for the winter. It is quite easy to get a rich harvest with a minimum of effort - it is important to observe the basic rules of sowing and to choose the right plantations for planting.
Choosing a culture
Most gardeners prefer to grow their own onion sets, which is used for planting in the future. This allows you to control the entire process and be sure that various chemicals are not used. But this approach will be fraught with difficulty. First of all, you will have to care for the so-called chernushka for the whole year only in order to grow a bow from it on a feather or turnip next year. Secondly, it will be necessary to prepare a room with a temperature of 18–20 degrees to store it throughout the winter, otherwise the seed material will simply disappear, and you will still have to buy ready onion sets.
If you are going to buy onions for planting in a specialty store or on the market, then you need to know exactly which one is worth taking. The future harvest depends on it. After all, if the material for sowing is bad, then whatever care, watering and feeding you provided him in the future, you will not have to hope for a bountiful harvest.
So, what to look for when buying - now find out.
- It should be dry. Not even small moisture bulbs are allowed.
- It should not be visible damage. Various dark spots, damage and unsightly appearance indicate that onions are of poor quality. To count on a rich harvest in this case is not necessary.
- Feel the onion with your hands, slightly pressing it. It should be tight. By the way, so you can see if there are empty bulbs there. If a lot of them, then give up the purchase.
- Decide on the size you need. On the shelves you will find bulbs ranging in size from 1 to 3 cm. If you plan to get an early harvest of greenery, then give preference to heads of 2–2.5 cm. It will quickly rise and provide you with a fresh pen before anyone else. You can also use a larger size for this purpose, by the way, it will cost you less for the price.
The above rules are relevant for both the purchase, and for the onions grown by you in the garden. In order to achieve a simultaneous shoot and ripening, in any case, it is necessary to sort the bow by size and remove the bad specimens.
For the cultivation of onions on the head, that is, to obtain a large juicy root vegetables that can be stored all winter, the average size is more suitable. The optimal calibration is 1.5–2 cm. It is better not to use smaller heads for early planting, since you will not get a harvest from them soon.
Presowing treatment
After you have selected a good planting material, do not immediately plant it in the soil. Although this plant is rather unpretentious, it will still be necessary to conduct its preparation for planting.
Fifteen days before the planned date of landing in the ground, remove it and spread it out in a dry room with a temperature of 20-25 degrees Celsius. After 10 days we provide him with warming up to 40 degrees. This can be done by placing boxes near the heaters. But do not keep it there for more than 1.5 days to prevent overheating.
Immediately before planting, in 15 minutes, soak all the seed in a solution of copper sulfate (1%). This will allow to disinfect the material and rid it of microbes that could harm the future crop.
Some experts advise for five hours before planting soak the seed in the solution of fertilizers.
But this procedure is not mandatory. Of course, it will provide a quicker shoot, but even without such a soaking of onion sets it will feel great.
Soil preparation
An important factor is the quality of the soil and the landing site. This plant prefers sunny places with good ventilation.Also, the plant will feel better if the soil beneath it is loosened and cleared of weeds.
It is also important what crops you cultivated in this soil last season. Ideal if it were cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, pumpkin, beans or potatoes. As we can see, the range is quite wide, so there should not be any problems with the choice of location.
Choosing a place, dig up a bed. The depth of loosening should reach 30 cm. Organic soil fertilized in autumn will be an ideal place for future onion harvest. Mineral fertilizers are better for gardeners to add in spring and during the growing season.
Planting dates
Like many other annuals, onion sets is planted in May. But the dates may shift due to the climatic characteristics of the region. So, in the southern regions of our country it is planted before everyone else: around the end of March - the first decade of April.
The next region with a landing period from mid-April to early May will be the Volga region. In the middle band, onions can be planted throughout May. The Urals and Siberia are distinguished by the latest landing dates. Here the dates are shifted to the end of May - the beginning of June.
Onions are planted and set before winter. Here the main thing is to correctly predict the weather. When the average daily temperature is set at around 5 degrees, you can start sowing. To prevent freezing, seeding is not soaked before planting.
Some gardeners do not rely only on intuition and actively use the lunar calendar to determine the planting date. It is believed that the quality and volume of the future harvest depends on the phase in which the moon is at the time of landing. Moreover, every year favorable and unfavorable days will be completely different, since the lunar calendar does not coincide with the usual one.
Methods
The following method is considered to be a universal method of planting onions: on the garden they make indentations at a distance of 5–15 cm in a row and 10 cm in the aisle. The distance here depends on the size of the bulb itself: the larger its caliber, the greater will be the distance. But not all gardeners adhere to this rule, insisting that it is their way that produces the greatest yield. But even among this diversity one can single out the main methods.
Chinese
With this method of sowing, they adhere to the standard distances between plants, but the bulbs themselves do not deepen into the ground, but sprinkle with loose earth on top. When the root crop reaches the desired size, remove this land from it. Thus, on the surface you can see not only the pen, but also the bulb itself.
This method allows you to quickly develop the root system, which provides active nutrition culture. In another way it is also called "sowing on the ridges." That is, we do not just not deepen sevok, and we plant it on the ridges, hills. They can easily be formed by passing the tool along the garden at a distance of 10 cm. According to the opinions of gardeners, with this method it is very easy to care for the crops.
Mostovoy
This method of planting is ideal for growing onions to collect greens. To inexperienced gardeners, it may seem very strange: the prepared site is completely covered with bulbs (it is better to use a larger caliber), each individual bulb is slightly pressed into the ground. Forms a kind of onion carpet on the open ground, which is sprinkled with earth.
Basically, the method of planting depends on what kind of plant you are going to plant and for what purposes. As you know, there can be two: on the turnip or for the pen.
On the turnip
The main purpose of growing onions is to collect large juicy bulbs. To achieve such a result, the Chinese method is well suited. It provides sufficient warming of the most ripe onion, which will ensure long and trouble-free storage in winter.
The classic method is the landing of onion sets in open ground. This culture is unpretentious, so do not give it a precious place in the greenhouse.It is useful for you to grow more demanding crops.
On the bed with a hoe or other tool, longitudinal grooves are made at a distance of 10–15 cm from each other. The bulbs will need a place to get large root vegetables. In order for them not to be messed up among themselves and filled with all the necessary nutrients, leave a distance of 20 cm between the bulbs. After that, sprinkle the bulbs with soil and water abundantly.
It does not matter if you planted sevok very often, later it will be possible to thin out, and torn plants immediately use as food.
On the greens
As mentioned above, for the cultivation of fragrant bright greens, it is better to take medium and large size sevok. The technology of landing does not differ originality. For convenience of weeding between the rows leave a distance of 15 cm. The onions themselves are placed 5 cm in a row.
So, step by step instructions is as follows:
- prepare a bed of the desired size;
- make shallow longitudinal grooves 5 cm deep;
- each bulb deepen a little in the ground so that it keeps in the soil;
- sprinkle with a layer of soil no more than 5 cm thick;
- Water heavily landing.
Interestingly, the batun onion, which is popular in our country, which gives large fleshy greens, can be grown only from seeds or seedlings. But you will never find a sevok for growing this species. By the way, it is very convenient to grow seedlings in a cell from under the eggs, since the root crop is practically not developed in this variety.
Caring for beds
Onions are very fond of water, so in the first months actively water it. Do not forget also to get rid of weeds in time. As we can see, the care of the bow should not cause any particular difficulties. By July, taking care of him will be even easier. At this time, you can stop regular watering. This will give the plant the opportunity to mature.
If you like to fertilize crops with minerals, then onions should be treated with them 3 times throughout the growing season.
Common mistakes
Sometimes gardeners still have problems with growing onions. In most cases, this is due to common mistakes that were made at different stages.
- Do not delay harvesting ripened crops. When left in the garden for longer than the prescribed period, the onion resumes its growth and becomes unsuitable for long-term storage.
- There is an erroneous opinion that it is better to plant large-scale sevings before winter. In this case, the probability is high that the plant will give arrows, with the result that it will not bring a good harvest.
- Manure and humus on the bed should be added in the fall. Do not do this immediately before landing. First, you risk infecting the plant, and secondly, you can only get greens, but not large bulbs.
- If you sow onions in the fall, then wait for the first frost and only then cover it with mulch material.
Do not choose for planting onions places where groundwater lies near the surface. There is a high risk of bulbs rotting, especially in rainy years.
Recommendations
Some novice gardeners find it difficult to determine the stage of full maturity. Feathers will tell you about this: when the onions have ripened, the formation of new feathers stops, the old ones fall on the ground and become yellowish.
With a bow that you put on a turnip, it is forbidden to cut off feathers. Of course, there is a great temptation to seize this opportunity and kill two birds with one stone: put the feathers on a fresh salad and harvest in the fall. But this is not worth doing, as tearing down feathers will reduce yields. It is better to plant a separate bed on the green, which can be cut off at least every day.
Even if you have a great harvest, it is important to properly prepare it for the winter. To do this, pluck the roots in dry weather and leave under the sun for another 3 days. This will kill all pathogens and harmful microorganisms, which will preserve the quality and taste of onions.
Onions - unpretentious plant.With a minimum of effort, he will give you a rich harvest.. Without it, you can not do when preparing many dishes and in the season of respiratory diseases.
Agrotechnics and simple gardeners have experimented a lot to bring out the best ways of planting onion sets. You just have to use the already proven schemes and enjoy the result.
