Why strawberries do not blush, and harden and what to do about it?
Strawberries are very tasty and fragrant berries, and their fruits ripen earlier than others. Therefore, everyone is looking forward to the appearance of red berries, which are so nice to eat.Unfortunately, while the strawberry grows in its own bed, the gardener has to face various difficulties and problems. Strawberries, like any other plant, subject to various diseases. Moreover, not only people, but also various pests love to eat its sweet fruits.
Many gardeners notice that strawberries do not blush, but harden. The causes of this problem are discussed in the article.
Causes of poor harvest
Strawberry is a rather capricious plant. If she does not create a comfortable environment for growth, the bush will dry up, and the berries will not turn red, but only harden.
The main reasons for reducing the yield of these fruits are the following.
- Not enough moisture. Strawberry likes to be watered, especially if it is hot, arid time. When they begin to tie fruit, it is necessary to thoroughly water the bushes. Even when the first berries are noticed, do not forget about the constant watering of the plant. If the ground around the bush has dried and cracked, the leaves began to fade, and the fruits have become small, it is urgent to begin abundant watering of strawberries.
- Excessive watering. It is also not necessary to flood this plant too much, because in this way you can provoke a variety of problems. As a result, it will be possible to observe the beginning of the decay of the berries. From the abundant amount of liquid, the root of the plant begins to rot, and its ground portion dries out.
- Uncomfortable conditions for growth. For example, strawberries are planted in the garden, where there is not enough heat and light. In addition, this plant is very afraid of the cold wind and drafts.
- Thermal burn If you water the strawberries under the scorching sun, you can provoke a plant burn. Watering should be done very early, before the dew is still dry, because all the moisture should be completely absorbed before the sun.
- Vitamin fasting. Bushes need constant feeding, for these purposes it is necessary to use phosphorus and potassium. Ash is one of the safest fertilizers of natural origin.
Late blight
In addition to the above problems, very often gardeners are faced with a variety of diseases of strawberries.
If it is noticed that brown spots appeared on the leaves (subsequently these leaves dry up very quickly), and the strawberries themselves do not redden, but harden, then it can be concluded that the culture has undergone a disease like late blight.
The taste of such fruits are very bitter. The danger of this disease is that it can spread to nearby plants.
The main causes of this disease include the following.
- Purchase of seedlings that have been infected with fungus.
- Growing varieties that are prone to similar diseases.
- Too thick bushes - as a result, the plants are poorly ventilated, creating excellent conditions for the appearance of fungus.
- Poor weeding beds - weeds are the source of the spread of various diseases.
- Insufficient amount of nutrients, lack of regular feeding.
- Work with a non-sterile instrument - the gardener can independently spread the disease throughout the site.
How to resist the disease?
Naturally, the question arises how to get rid of this disease.
Various chemicals can be used to combat this fungus.
- "Nitrafen" - with its help, it is necessary to disinfect the ground after the diseased bushes have been removed. You can also process the plant itself until new leaves appear on it.
- Copper-based drugs, for example, Kuprosat and Oksikhomare used to treat the plant as soon as the first signs of the disease appear.
- Contact fungicides, for example, "Metaxil" and "Topaz", used in the flowering period of strawberries. These substances are potent drugs, so they should be used when the plant is heavily infected.
- Potassium permanganate - it is necessary to prepare a special solution, taking 5 grams of the substance per 1 bucket of clean water. This tool is sprayed on the bushes.
- Iodine solution - for its preparation they mix 5 milliliters of iodine, 2 tablespoons of soda, 20 grams of soap and 10 liters of water. A similar solution is sprayed from the very beginning of the season and up to its end, taking breaks of 2 weeks.
Using these drugs, you must clearly follow the instructions. Many gardeners prefer to use folk remedies instead.
- Herbal Infusion - take 1.5 kilograms of finely chopped leaves and stalks of nettle. Pour 10 liters of water and leave to infuse during the day. After this time, you can use the infusion to spray on strawberry bushes.
- Garlic infusion - you need to chop the cloves of garlic to get 200 grams. Pour the mass with a bucket of water and leave to infuse for 2-3 days. After that, rub 30 grams of laundry soap on a fine grater and add to the solution. Mix everything thoroughly, strain and sprinkle strawberries.
- Ash Infusion - Take 300 grams of ash and 30 grams of soap, pour a bucket of water. Mix everything well and spray the culture.
- Dairy based infusion - for its preparation using milk or whey. 2 liters of dairy product is poured into a bucket of water and the plant is sprinkled with the resulting suspension.
If it is noticed that strawberries do not blush, but harden, it is necessary to take urgent measures to eliminate the problem before it is too late.
