Why strawberries do not develop and what to do about it?
Strawberry is undoubtedly a tasty berry, which has long won the hearts of many people in Russia. And therefore it is not surprising that the number of gardeners who decide to plant them in their beds is increasing every year. At first glance, a strawberry is an unpretentious plant capable of growing in almost any conditions, but this is not at all the case. On the problems of waiting people who have decided to grow strawberries, and will be discussed in this article.
Causes of poor strawberry development
There are several main reasons why strawberries do not develop. Usually they can be recognized by the appearance of the berries and the bush. Recognizing the problem, you need to immediately begin to address it, otherwise you risk losing not only the entire crop, but also the bushes themselves. Let's take a look at each of the problems separately, and also what needs to be done to fix them.
Lack of space and nutrients
In the course of its aging, strawberries grow incredibly quickly and grow in size. Therefore, the land on which it grows, ceases to cope with providing it with substances necessary for growth.
Old strawberry bushes must be propagated and transplanted to a new place. This can be done in two ways: by dividing the horns or growing rosettes. Understand that the berry bush is time to transplant, it is possible to reduce the yield, the appearance of dry antennae on its top and the fact that the berry becomes shallow.
Boron deficiency
Boron deficiency is a problem faced by many strawberry growers.
The main sign of this is the deformation of the berries. They appear oblong stripes similar to deep scars, and the berries themselves become extremely unnatural shape. In addition, the problem can be recognized by the leaves. At their edges, a yellow border appears, and the leaves themselves begin to acquire a twisted form. It also happens that the plants wither after flowering.
To eliminate the problem, the bushes are treated with special tools like “Folirus Bohr”. Such substances do not belong to pesticides and in the majority are not harmful to humans, and therefore they can be processed directly during the fruiting period.
Bedbug
The appearance of a blind bug in your garden is the third reason for the poor growth of the berries. This insect lays its eggs when strawberries bloom, after which the larvae emerge from them, which begin to feed on strawberries.
To understand that your garden has been attacked by blind bugs, it is possible by the specific shape of the berries, called “cat's snout” in common people. The upper half of the berry looks unchanged, and the lower one seems to grow into itself. Another sign can be called the appearance of large brown beetles on your strawberry during its flowering period.
The best way to get rid of the bedbugs, of course, will be treatment with insecticides. But it can only be done before the start of flowering strawberries, otherwise the insecticide will scare away beneficial insects that pollinate strawberries, and then the crop will disappear anyway. And, of course, in no case should you sprinkle strawberries during the ripening of fruits, there will be little sense from this, since the eggs are already inside for a long time, and there are berries after that is dangerous to health.
If you do not process the strawberries before flowering, you can always get rid of the beetles by hand - they are not so numerous.
Freezing
If the winter was harsh, and the gardener did not take care to cover the strawberries, it may happen that the crop will be lost due to the freezing of the bushes. In this case, the berry usually simply does not ripen and remains small and green.
To check this, you need to study the receptacle. If the flower in the center is dark, it means that it has suffered, and the greater the darkening, the more damage will be.
This can be corrected by making funds to strengthen the immunity of plants. However, this does not give one hundred percent certainty that the flowers will not wither after flowering. It is always better to prepare in advance to deal with problems.
Be sure to cover the strawberries for the winter, especially young bushes, and not to neglect the use of funds for immunity as prevention.
Drying out
Due to the strong contrast of temperatures in our country, along with the freezing of strawberries, there is a problem of its drying, the main feature of which is, of course, dry leaves and a stem.
Strawberries like sunlight, but do not like high temperatures. The optimum temperature is 21 degrees. Do not forget to water strawberries in a timely manner. If the temperature is about recommended, then it should be watered every two or three days, and if it is higher, then every day.
But you need to be careful when watering, try not to pour strawberries. It is curious that when flooded, the roots of strawberries begin to rot, and its upper part dries out, as from a lack of moisture.
Late blight
Late blight (leather rot) is a dangerous disease of plants, as a result of which the fruits dry out and turn brown. Actually, this is its main feature.
Save the affected bushes is impossible, they have to be removed. The strawberry plantation will need to be moved to another place and not planted here for 4-5 years. It is best to plant cabbage at this place, as it not only does not give in to the disease, but also helps to get rid of it quickly.
