 How to make beds for strawberries with your own hands?

At least one bed of strawberries can be found on almost every country garden plot. At least it is convenient to lure children to the cottage. Adults will not give up fresh berries. At the same time, to get a good harvest of strawberries, you have to work hard. The result depends a lot on the shape and size of the bed.

Choice of place

In order to competently make a bed for strawberries, should choose the right place for it.

  • It is necessary that the site was well lit. Therefore, you should consider the possibility of orientation of the beds from east to west. This will allow the strawberries to warm up all daylight hours. We should not forget that in three years we will have to select a new place for this berry. Otherwise, it will be exposed to diseases, and the fruits - to shrink.
  • It is necessary to break a bed under this culture in places where legumes, lettuce grew before. There, where "tomatoes" and cucumbers, as well as eggplants "lived" before, it is useless to justify strawberries. Insects and bacteria that have settled in such a place, together with the predecessor plants, will not allow strawberries to grow and produce fruits.
  • It is undesirable to plant this crop near fruit trees, as the caterpillars, together with apples and other garden gifts, can enjoy berries on the ground.

Optimal size

Whichever variant of the arrangement of the ridge under the strawberry is chosen, you should always consider which sizes will be most suitable for creating the best conditions for the development of strawberry bushes and ease of processing.

If you equip an eighty centimeters wide ridge and plant berry bushes in it in two rows, the distance between these rows will be approximately forty centimeters. This will provide the plants with a normal access of air, in addition, the berry will be able to calmly weed, loosen, remove extra mustaches and harvest.

It is more convenient for some to make the distance between the bushes thirty centimeters, if we are talking about varieties with small roots and leaves. Strawberries of large varieties with a strong root system should be planted at a distance of half a meter from each other. In some cases, this distance can be increased to sixty centimeters.

The height of the beds is usually from twenty centimeters to a meter. It all depends on the chosen cultivation technology.

Moreover, a higher height is preferable to a small one. - “Low planting” foreshadows the development of weeds and fungus due to the large accumulation of moisture between the berry bushes.

The distance between the beds themselves should be sixty-five to seventy centimeters. This allows you to drive along such a path as a standard garden wheelbarrow, which is indispensable for processing such plants.

Materials used

To make a ridge for strawberries, you can use various materials that are found in the farm. Both slate sheets and wooden enclosing structures are used. From the boards you can put together something like a flower bed, into which you can plant bushes. Plastic bottles and pipes of different diameters will be used when arranging beds. Curbstone or brick, too, will not be superfluous.

Varieties

There are a lot of varieties of beds for strawberries. They differ in size, shape and principle of the device - from primitive to complex with the original irrigation system.

Horizontal or standard

This is the usual low beds without fences, dug on the size of a spade bayonet. They are good because they are simply arranged, on the other hand, as plants grow and develop, we have to weed regularly.

And besides the beds, the paths in the neighborhood also grow. In addition, it is easy to bring diseases to low horizontal areas with strawberries. It is enough if the pathogenic microflora is on the shoes of a person.

Covering may be a kind of horizontal ridge. All the land around the bushes is covered with black film or other material that does not allow weeds to grow, and the strawberry leaves touch the wet ground.The complexity of the work is precisely to organize such a shelter, although ease of use justifies such labor-intensive costs. Yes, and covering material can be applied for several years.

Vertical

Vertical structures can be made suspended, using, for example, bags with slits. It is convenient to put together a pyramid of boards, fold out of tire covers of various sizes. In the pipes, which are used to accommodate strawberry bushes, holes for planting are spiraling through.

Vertical structures are better than others in that they take up little space, they look beautiful, especially during the flowering and fruiting of strawberries.

They can be placed on the south side of the gazebo or the facade of the house (shed). Berries with this arrangement of the bushes do not touch the ground and do not rot.

A multi-tiered vertical design of vessels filled with earth does not have weeds (or almost does not), so it is not necessary (or almost not) to engage in weeding.

Harvest from multi-level, for example, pyramidal, flower beds is easier to shoot than from a low one. No need to work leaning, the berries are better visible. On the other hand, it is necessary to take into account that in winter the longline construction will freeze through. Therefore, plants for the cold period will still have to "evacuate" to a place warmer.

If strawberries grow in pots or containers, they must be fed more often than on a standard bed. This is also a concern. Appropriate procedures have to do at least once a week.

With fences

Such ridges, in their essence, are containers filled with earth. Moreover, they can be made at a rather large height, depending on the configuration of the box. Then there is no need to bend over low, in order to weed out any two rows of bushes from the weed and remove the grown mustaches. This approach allows you to make a warm bed by placing a layer of compost in the box.

The disadvantage of ridges with fences can be called the fact that when using them, it is necessary to water the plants with special care - in this case the roots are not able to pull moisture from the depth.

How to do it yourself?

To independently make a bed for strawberries from a bag, you do not need to make calculations, and also use a drawing. It is enough to sew pockets on the bag or take independent small bags (you can buy them in a specialty store or make one yourself). In them to plant bushes and hang the structure. The best place to place it is in the immediate vicinity of the terrace or gazebo.

To arrange the drainage system in this case is not required. When watering, excess water will leak through the fabric of the bag.

To make a pyramid of wood for placing strawberries, you need to make a certain number of boxes of different sizes. Then collect them in a given shape. In the design to fill the soil and plant strawberries.

From the pipe installed vertically, you can make a bed that does not take almost any space on the site. In this design, it is important to properly arrange drip irrigation. For the manufacture you need to take:

  • PVC pipe with a diameter of at least eleven centimeters and a length of two meters;
  • PVC pipe with a diameter of two centimeters of the same length (also suitable pipe made of rubber or polyethylene);
  • tools - a knife with a sharp end, drill, burlap;
  • gravel, nutritious soil.

In a large pipe you need to cut holes ranging in size from two to five centimeters, in rows or sticking to a different positioning system. The most favorable distance between the holes - ten to fifteen centimeters.

Then make holes in a small pipe. The more often they are located, the more intense the penetration of moisture can be expected when watering. The pipe should be wrapped with a material capable of flowing water. The same burlap, for example.

It will have to be fixed on the pipe after a certain distance. A cap is installed in the lower hole, and the upper edge is fitted with a funnel.

A larger pipe needs to be deepened into the ground by half a meter. Pour gravel around it, then land and stamp. Insert a thin one into the middle of this pipe and fill the free space between them with nutrient composition. If the soil drains over time, add some more. After this, it remains to plant strawberry bushes in the holes.

For simplicity, only the outer tube can be used. Then she has more earth inside her. But watering is not so convenient at all.

A vertical bed of old tires from a car is made simply and simply. Although safe, in an environmental sense, this material can not be called. Every fifteen to twenty centimeters in a circle in the tires make holes, which are conveniently planted strawberry seedlings.

Install the first on the ground, put the inside of the grid and pour the ground. A new tire is put on top and refilled with earth. The number of levels of the device depends on the requests of the owner and how many old products there are at hand.

After completing the construction of the tower, you can start planting seedlings.

For regions where summer is cool, it’s good to arrange a warm garden bed - something like a greenhouse. Performed such a design on the principle of multi-layer cake.

At first the box is made, in the place of “home for strawberry” a recess is made in the ground. In the lower layer of the "pie" place the waste of wood - chips, broken branches. After that, several levels of cardboard pieces are made up and fine wood garbage - chips and sawdust - fall asleep on it. They put the grass that they just mowed, tops, old leaves. After that you can put the compost or humus, and then just the ground. Given the fact that the roots of strawberries go down to a depth of thirty centimeters, you need to lay a nutrient layer of appropriate height.

The bed "heated" turns out high - about a meter up. If you do not want it to protrude too much above the surface, the depression in the ground beneath it can be made deeper.

    Using slate for garden beds is a common idea, although, from an environmental point of view, this is not the best option. Asbestos cement is not useful for the land in which it is buried. Bribes usability of this material. Garden beds, fenced with corrugated sheets, even look elegant.

    When constructing a ridge, it makes sense to place wavy slate on a frame made of wood or metal, the flat one can simply be buried to a depth of ten to twenty centimeters, holding all sides together with a metal corner so that the structure does not fall apart in spring.

    If you approach the matter thoroughly, such a fence will last at least three years - until the next "move" strawberry culture to a new location.
