Strawberry "Elvira": description of the variety and cultivation agrotechnology
When choosing a strawberry variety for planting, it is important to pay attention to the following factors: the berry must be able to ripen quickly and in large quantities, be tasty and not require any special requirements regarding care. One of the varieties of culture that meets all the requirements is “Elvira”.
Characteristic
Strawberry "Elvira" ripens early, in early June. Although it was bred in Holland, due to its cold resistance, it feels quite well in the conditions of Russia.Description of the variety suggests that garden strawberries are immune to most diseases inherent in this crop. The "Elvira" forms a rather medium-sized bush with a spreading "cap" with large leaves of beautiful green color. As a rule, ten strawberries are formed on the peduncle, and the peduncles sometimes have two, and sometimes three. On one bush gardener usually collects from 600 grams to a kilogram of strawberries, which is a very worthy indicator.
The weight of one berry varies from 30 to 60 grams. The shiny skin is painted in bright red color, the dark pink flesh of “Elvira” is juicy and not watery, the taste is sweet, not spoiled by acid, and the smell reminds of the aroma of wild strawberry. The sugar content in fruits reaches 6%, and ascorbic acid - 35%.
This variety is used both in fresh and processed form. Strawberries are transformed into jams, drinks; It is used as a filling for baking, for desserts and in salads. It is important to mention that “Elvira” is often frozen for the winter.
Advantages and disadvantages
If you compare "Elvira" with other varieties, it becomes clear that one of its main advantages is the innate resistance to numerous diseases. Since strawberries are not afraid of fungi, it can be used in a humid climate, and immunity to root diseases explains why the variety grows even in areas with high humidity. In addition, strawberries are not afraid of low temperatures, which expands the possibility of growing them in most of the regions.
“Elvira” has a good logging ability, and she is not afraid of transportation. In 95% of cases, the berries are brought completely intact. The big plus is the fact that it is allowed to land both in the spring and in the autumn months. The taste of berries is sweet, much better than "Eliani". The variety begins to ripen early, in mid-June, which, of course, clearly distinguishes it from other strawberry varieties. Moreover, the harvest can stretch up to September, which allows to feast on berries throughout the summer.
A relative disadvantage is the requirement to wrap the beds for the winter in the case when the temperature drops below 22 degrees. In addition, this variety requires regular loosening of the land. Some people call the minus "Elvira" and the need for periodic gathering of berries, although it is unlikely it really causes difficulties.
Landing
Variety "Elvira" planted in the spring or autumn, but only before the onset of frost, so that the root system had the opportunity to gain a foothold. In the second case, the beds are prepared throughout the summer months. In the first landing is carried out when the frost finally end, including the night. It is important that both the beds and the air get warm.
If the region is warm, then disembarkation occurs in the last week of April or the first week of May, and if it is cold, then starting from the middle of the last month of spring. In the fall, landing in warm regions occurs from the end of the last summer month to the beginning of the first autumn, and in cool regions - in the middle of August. Autumn planting especially requires high-quality watering during the adaptation period of strawberries. Usually, the land is irrigated in the morning or when the sun has already set, and the process always ends with loosening.
Since “Elvira” is not afraid of wet soils and low-lying areas, it is allowed to arrange beds there, but only in the case when the land is nutritious. Ideally, these should be loamy areas, provided with good blowing. In addition, this variety is not welcome hit by direct rays - this suggests that a small shadow is recommended. If you do not fulfill this condition, the strawberries can dry corny in hot weather.
The most optimal situation is as follows: from 12:00 to 13:00 the beds are illuminated by the sun, and then they hide in the shade. And if there are no nearby buildings or trees that can perform darkening, then artificial fences should be used.
The gap between rows should be approximately 30 centimeters, the distance between the bushes themselves is recommended the same. With the characteristics of the site is allowed to shorten the aisle to 25 centimeters, but to increase the length between the bushes themselves to 40 centimeters. In principle, it is allowed to use the chess system, but it is worth being prepared that watering in this case will be difficult.
Also, on low areas, or too wet, you should not use it - it is better to limit one-line method. Before direct planting all the beds are thoroughly irrigated and warmed. Each dug fossa is also filled with water. Once the water is absorbed and forms a liquid slurry, it will be possible to place the seedling in the recess, straighten the roots and sprinkle them with earth. It is important that the soil does not hide the central point of growth, otherwise it threatens even the destruction of "Elvira".
It is necessary to add a few words about the choice of planting material: sprouts must have at least four leaflets formed and be completely healthy. Seedlings are allowed to grow with strawberry seeds. It is customary to propagate the culture with the help of outlets, which are located near the main maternal bush and must be healthy, without any damage. So it will be possible to guarantee the appearance of strong strawberry bushes, capable of producing a quality crop.
It is worth mentioning that it is still important to carefully examine the condition of the leaflets - if insects gnawed them or the outward manifestations of some diseases were present, then this sample should be immediately removed.
Care
Care for this variety of strawberries is fairly standard: watering, feeding, loosening and weeding. Primary fertilization is carried out fourteen days after planting - usually nitrogen solutions or ammonia. The need to use nitrogen is due to the fact that it contributes to the growth of green mass. The second dressing is arranged when flower stalks appear - at this moment potassium and phosphorus are introduced. Finally, the third time to fertilize "Elvira" will need at the beginning of the crop - again with phosphorus and potassium.
It is worth mentioning that the culture is also well perceived and organic fertilizers, for example, infusions of weeds, chicken droppings or cow manure. Organic matter is introduced in the same periods as mineral fertilizers. Fertilizing the beds is best during watering. In addition, it will always be a good idea to irrigate the plantings with a solution of ash or powder it with dry matter. It should be remembered that nitrogenous solutions will be harmful in those periods when the active flowering begins and when the strawberries are formed.
Irrigation of beds and loosening should be done almost daily. These procedures are accompanied by weed-weed weeding, and they must be uprooted. It is worth remembering that it is on the weeds that insects most often settle, and disputes of diseases arise. It is better to clean them with bare hands, including capturing the root.
If you remove the roots, you get to stop the growth of weeds throughout the site. Loosening should not be too deep, to a depth of 7 to 10 centimeters. Otherwise, the root system will be damaged. The main purpose of this procedure is to provide access of oxygen to the roots, as well as to prevent the occurrence of rot and fungi. Watering is most convenient to organize drip. Water should always be warm, ideally defended, and directed to the root. Leaves are important to keep dry. Loosening begins as soon as the liquid is completely absorbed.
In addition, those bushes, which will appear berries, should be periodically freed from the mustache. This increases the yield, as well as the free space provided for each plant. If you regularly do not carry out pruning, the bush will become neglected, which will lead to the deterioration of the berries. Before the winter months, the beds will have to be wrapped, after cutting the sheets and sprinkling the culture with solutions against insects. For this, some kind of non-woven material is usually used, on top of which the ground is laid.
Gardeners reviews
Judging by the comments of the gardeners, the variety "Elvira" receives exclusively positive ratings. It is noted that the harvest is always stable and abundant even in the most unsuccessful regions, in terms of climate, for example, where summer turns out to be overcast and rainy. Usually from one bush receive kilogram of fruits that is equivalent to hundred features. Berries are used most often for jam, freezing and fresh consumption. The grade is unpretentious, care of it is quite banal and uncomplicated. Excellent taste not only allows you to enjoy the harvest within your family, but also successfully sell “Elvira” for sale.
The only point about which it is important not to forget - for the winter months, the beds should be wrapped up. In addition, sometimes there is the only drawback of "Elvira" - its root system is not very stable. In winter, if we neglect the wrapping, it trivially freezes. For beginners, regular irrigation and shade requirements may be a problem.
In addition, a very important point is indicated in the reviews: after harvesting strawberries, the soil must be fertilized and treated for diseases and insects, since by the end of the harvest period the culture is very weak.
