Strawberry "Borovitskaya": description of the variety and cultivation
Aroma, unique taste and relative simplicity make strawberries a frequent choice of Russian gardeners. In order to consistently get good yields, it is important to choose the right variety of this crop. Therefore, it is worthwhile to consider the description of the Borovitskaya variety, the peculiarities of its cultivation, the advantages and disadvantages of this breed and the feedback from gardeners who have already harvested this berry.
History reference
Strawberry (garden strawberry) "Borovitskaya" was created in the All-Russian Selection and Technological Institute of Horticulture and Nursery, which is located in Moscow (Biryulyovo district). The variety is a hybrid, obtained by crossing two fairly well-known varieties - "Redgontlent" and "Hope". In the state register "Borovitskaya" was included in 2003.
It was zoned directly into two regions of Russia - the Far East and the Volga-Vyatka. At the same time, there are recommendations to grow it in other regions of the country, in particular, in the Far Eastern and Central.
Characteristic
The bushes of this garden strawberry are of medium size, characterized by pomp and ability to maintain a vertical position. Scourge bushes densely covered with dark green leaves, which are quite large in appearance and covered with visible "wrinkles". The cloves on the leaves are usually strongly pronounced. During flowering on each of the bushes a relatively large number of inflorescences are formed, which are located above the level of the leaves - thanks to this, the fruits formed from them do not spread on the ground, but remain hanging in the air.
The inflorescences of this variety belong to the type of semi-sprawling multi-flowered and are located on long and powerful peduncles, which are covered with a barely noticeable down. Almost all the flowers of this variety at the end of flowering form the fruit ovary.
Fruit
The first harvest "Borovitskaya" usually brings in the period from the last days of June to the second half of July. This allows us to attribute this strawberry to medium-ripening varieties. This breed is not remontantnuyu, which means that the harvest from its bushes is carried out once per season. At the same time, the very first berries formed on the bushes of this garden strawberry have a relatively large mass, reaching 50 grams. The shape of these fruits is usually irregular, "harmonic". Inside these berries are often voids. All subsequent fruits have the correct form of a wide cone and are characterized by weight up to 30 g (average weight is about 17 g). For all the berries "Borovitskaya" characterized by the absence of the neck.
As the fruit ripens, the skin changes color from red-orange (unripe berries) to cherry red (ripe berries). The pulp of ripe fruit is characterized by bright shades of red, a combination of high density and juiciness, as well as a noticeable fruity aroma.
The berries of this breed contain up to 7.2% of sugar and up to 1.4% of acids (due to which the concentration of vitamin C in them can reach 70 mg per 100 grams of the product). This composition causes the famous taste of this variety - very sweet with barely noticeable notes of acid. This causes the predominant use of the berries of this breed in fresh form and for the preparation of desserts. However, in canned form, as well as in the form of jam, Borovitskaya is also very good.
The yield of this garden strawberry very much depends on the proper care of it, and in optimal conditions it reaches 500 g per bush.
Advantages and disadvantages
Strawberry "Borovitskaya", like any other garden culture, has both positive and negative sides.
Virtues
In addition to the abundant formation of fruits and pleasant taste (its tasting score ranges from 4 to 5), characteristic of this variety are strawberry and other advantages. Thus, the Borovitskaya flowers are bisexual, which means that the variety does not need separate colonies of pollinators, since pollination may well occur between neighboring flowers and even within a single flower both with the help of intermediaries (bees and other insects), and with light gusts of wind.
Shrubs of this variety are very well tolerated as frosts, up to 35 degrees Celsius under a layer of snow, as well as heat and even drought. In addition, the variety in question is very resistant to infection with a number of dangerous strawberry diseases, including Wilts and various types of root rot.
Finally, late terms of ripening will allow summer residents to enjoy the taste of strawberries in the days when all other varieties ceased to bear fruit long ago, and later the beginning of flowering reduces the chances of damage to flowers by spring frosts. The variety forms many antennae, which facilitates its reproduction.
disadvantages
Although the yield of Borovitskaya is acceptable for a garden variety, industrial varieties are usually characterized by significantly higher yields, therefore this breed is a rare guest on large farms. Without loss of presentation, the berries of this breed can only be transported for relatively short distances (from the cottage home), with longer trips it often crumples and flows.
Despite the resistance to most characteristic diseases of strawberries, gray rot is very dangerous for this variety, leading to the need to use certain agricultural techniques to preserve the crop.
Landing
Many gardeners recommend planting this variety in early spring. However, with such planting dates, you can lose the first crop of this breed, since fruiting at Borovitskaya usually begins one year after planting. It will be best to plant its seedlings at the end of the summer or in the first days of autumn. It is important to choose a not too sunny day. So it is better to start preparing for the Borovitskaya planting in the last decade of August, waiting for the air temperature to drop.
In terms of crop rotation, it is strictly forbidden to re-plant strawberries of any kind on the same plot without a pause, which must be at least five years. The varieties on which tomatoes or potatoes were previously grown are not suitable for this variety. But the beds, which grew beans, garlic, radish, radish or parsley, ideal for this garden strawberry perfectly.
Before planting, the roots of seedlings are recommended to be cut to a length of 7 cm, cleaned and soaked for a short time in growth stimulants.
“Borovitskaya” needs to be planted according to a two-line scheme, in which narrow beds of 20 to 40 cm and wide between 60 to 80 cm between the rows are alternated on the garden. The distance between neighbors in a row should also be in the range from 20 to 40 cm.
The hole is first poured with warm water, then a seedling is placed in it, straightened its roots, sprinkled them on top of the ground and again watered abundantly. It is recommended to perform mulching, for which both organic (grass, straw, peat) and inorganic (agrofabric) materials are equally good.
Care
Starting watering bushes "Borovtsikoy" is in the last days of April (subject to dry and warm weather). In the future, it is important to respect the regularity of irrigation, and both before fruiting and after harvesting. It is best to water this variety in the morning so that the leaves have time to dry before the daytime heat. It is important not to overdo it when watering to reduce the risk of gray rot.
Two weeks after planting, saplings should be loaded with manure at the rate of 5 kg per 1 m2 of bed. After the start of fruit formation, you can additionally feed this variety with urea or a solution of ash. Feed chicken manure and manure can be done at any time, but mineral fertilizers are better to make at the end of the harvest.
In addition to fertilizing and irrigation, it is important to prevent infection by diseases and pests, as well as regular weeding and loosening the soil. To increase fertility, you need to regularly cut off your mustache. If you want to propagate your planting, then you need to leave a mustache and cut the flowers.
You do not need to mow the Borovitskaya bushes before winter - firstly, it is winter-hardy enough, and secondly, it will reduce the harvest next year.
