Today, blueberries are growing in many domestic garden plots. And this tasty and healthy berry was born in North America, thanks to the efforts of breeders. Very quickly, it spread to all corners of the earth.
Today there are several popular varieties. Many summer residents are attracted by the Liberty blueberries. Description varieties and reviews of gardeners will help to better learn about what is interesting this type of berries.
Selection of gardeners
Blueberries - a small berry saturated blue. Its compact, neat bushes will be a real decoration of the garden. But the main purpose of the berries - to carry the benefit of the body.
Thanks to its useful characteristics, blood sugar is reduced, the walls of blood vessels are strengthened, the work of the gastrointestinal tract is improved. In addition, blueberries contain vitamins, and also has a pleasant taste (both in the fresh state and in the form of jam). That is why many gardeners increasingly prefer this berry.
The number of varieties is so large and varied that it is always possible to choose a variety, focusing on the climatic conditions of a particular region. One of the most popular is the variety "Liberty".
Blueberry "Liberty" is well acclimatized in different regions of our country. Shrub refers to tall specimens. Description of the variety suggests that this species is resistant to frost, which means that gardeners from Siberia and the Far East can also afford to keep it at their summer cottage.
Blueberries are resistant to insect pests, so it does not need frequent tedious chemical processing. The plant produces a large amount of harvest: berries can be harvested from late July to early September.
Reviews gardeners say that The quality of the berries is very good: they have a dense skin and a slightly sour taste, which many people like.
If they are carefully collected (and the berries come off very easily from the bush), then they remain dry. In this form, blueberries can be stored for a long time, while not losing its attractive appearance and taste.
Characteristic
"Liberty" is considered one of the novelties - the variety settled on our open spaces not so long ago, it belongs to the late ripening. When the harvest of other berries is over, the berries of this variety can still ripen and delight the owners with vitamins. It is popular not only in our country, they actively grow blueberries in the USA, Poland, the Netherlands.
Berry can be collected both manually and using agricultural equipment. The variety is well kept frozen, jams are made from it.
This variety has good frost resistance and, judging by its characteristics, it calmly withstands temperatures up to minus 35 degrees. But the gardeners still need to hedge against loss. This applies primarily to cold regions, where in winter the temperature of 30 degrees is normal.
For Belarus, Ukraine, the southern regions and regions of central Russia, the special shelter of blueberries for the winter is not required. Over the summer, the tree has time to cover up with new wood, which is enough to protect at low temperatures below zero.
As practice shows, adult specimens overwinter without loss even in Siberia, but especially caring gardeners still cover blueberries with agrofibre. But young trees need protection. For the winter, they should be well covered with dry branches, and on top - with a film.
Some summer residents grow blueberries in deep pots or special containers. This facilitates the safety of plants in winter. They just can be brought into the greenhouse (for reliability, you can also wrap). In this case, you can be sure that the plant will not die, and the next year will delight with its delicious fruits. Harvest in summer and autumn is collected three times. An adult plant yields about six kilograms from each bush.
Externally, the plant is characterized by some distinctive features.
- Tall bush. Adult plant reaches a height of one and a half meters, has a lush crown.
- The sheets have an intense green color, have the shape of an ellipse, rather wide and smooth.
- Blue berries have a wax coating, slightly flattened, and grow - clusters. Size in length - a little more than one centimeter, diameter - up to 18 millimeters. The weight of one berry is, on average, one and a half grams. Distinguished by a dry margin from the bush. The pulp of the berry is characterized by density, and the berry itself is characterized by a pleasant persistent aroma.
- Trees are not afraid of moniliosis and anthracnose.
- Easily adapts to temperature extremes in autumn and springtime, it also endures winter thaws. When severe frosts need shelter.
How to grow and care?
The optimal landing time is autumn. The soil is prepared in advance from a combination of light black soil, sand, peat. Acceptable soil acidity - 3.5-4.
The substrate includes horse peat, coniferous rotted sawdust, chips, bark. In this mixture, peat should be (at least) 40 percent.
Planting begins with the fact that the soil is moistened, and the seedlings also need to straighten the roots well. The wells should be 80 cm in diameter, 50 cm deep, the substrate is laid at the bottom, rainwater is irrigated (no more than three buckets per square meter).
Saplings one year old are deepened a couple of centimeters lower than in the tank where they were before planting in open ground. A two-year-old tree is buried four centimeters, but not deeper.
To increase the PH level, sulfur is added in the form of a powder (10 to 15 grams per square meter) six months before planting, then watered with a solution of sulfuric acid (100 ml per 10 l) or table vinegar.
If the area allows, do not plant trees too often - let them be a meter away from each other. The blueberry root system is superficial, so when the tree takes root, it needs mulching. As a mulch, the needles of pine trees are ideal.
Every year the shrub requires pruning for rejuvenation. Some cut two-year branches. Then the tree gives a larger and tasty berry.
Here experiments are permissible. Specific and accurate recommendations can not be. In any case, the tree will grow and bear fruit, but each gardener will decide for himself what is better for his tree (maybe, by his own experiments and discoveries).
Of course, every summer resident during the season makes all the necessary feeding, and it is not much different from fertilizer for other berry bushes.
Some time after planting the tree, 40 grams of ammonium sulphate must be added. Every year the rate increases as the tree grows. Potassium, phosphorus, magnesium are also introduced in the first year. On the packaging with each fertilizer there is a detailed instruction on how much fertilizer will be optimal for berry trees. The main fertilizer that blueberries need is nitrogen. There is such a scheme: 50 percent must be paid at the beginning of the growing season, and the rest is divided into two portions, which blueberries receive in May and June.
No more nitrogen is needed. Shoots need to stay in growth before the onset of cold weather.
Reviews
Those who met with this relatively new variety of blueberries, have already made up their minds about it. The main advantages of summer residents are called high yields of this type and ease of maintenance.
Timely fertilization, watering and pruning are all you need to get delicious berries.
Some gardeners living in the northern regions still note that there have been cases of tree freezing. Therefore, for these regions it is recommended to carefully cover the trees. Covering material can always be found at hand and protect the tree to warm days.
