Blackberry "Brzezina": characteristics and agricultural technology
Blackberries - a fairly common berry, often found in gardens and gardens gardeners.Tasty, juicy, healthy, with a beautiful sheen berry is represented today by numerous varieties. Only recently, scientists managed to create a new species - the Polish "Brzezin". It has high taste properties, as well as excellent yield and survival rate in the Russian climate.
Variety description
Brzezina was bred by a representative of the Institute of Horticulture in the same city located in Poland. It was the breeder Jan Danek. By the way, before this, other fruitful hybrids appeared with its help. This variety was obtained as a result of complex crossing of such related varieties as "Black Satin" and "Darrow". From the distinctive features can be identified high productivity, pleasant taste.
Brzezina was propagated specifically for further research in the scientific laboratory of the gardening institute. The first landing was made in their native land. Here, the blackberry showed high yields. Only at the end of 2015, Brzeziny seedlings appeared on the market. Not all Russian gardeners managed to try this variety, but some of them don’t know anything about it.
Blackberry "Brzezina" is an early ripe, although it is strongly influenced by climatic conditions. For example, in Poland, the fruits appear in early July, in Ukraine and in central Russia - in the middle-end of the same month.
This variety has an excellent presentation. The form is slightly canonical, elongated by the end. There is an intense black color, beautiful gloss. Today this berry is in great demand among buyers, gardeners, farmers. Although in reality, Brzezin outwardly does not differ much from its kindred representatives.
The period of fruiting begins approximately from the second year after planting. This is characteristic of all representatives of the cultural blackberry. In the first season, there is a rapid growth of shoots, the first leaves begin to appear, but there are no flowers yet. Already in spring, the following year, last year's shoots are overgrown with flowers, and in the middle of summer you can see the first ripe berries.
Shrub can be called tall, it grows up to about 3 meters. However, according to summer residents, for the convenience of further picking berries, it is better to carry out the pruning procedure more often, not allowing the bushes to exceed 2 meters in height.
Blackberry bush will be able to demonstrate all the taste and nutritional qualities only in the third year after planting. This period is marked by stable fruiting. Subject to all the rules of agricultural engineering and care, Brzezina will delight the gardener with a high yield of delicious, fragrant berries.
General characteristics of the variety:
- the bush grows with great speed;
- thorns are completely absent;
- ripe fruits have a large size and excellent taste;
- berry skin is dense;
- bitterness, sugary sweetness is not, but there is a slight sourness;
- according to taste indices, fruits of a variety are estimated at 4.6 points out of 5;
- the average weight of a berry is 5 grams, but large fruits are also noted - up to 9 g;
- average yield per season reaches 8 kg.
Advantages and disadvantages
Of the advantages of this variety gardeners distinguish:
- resistance to low temperatures, frost;
- high yield in the third season;
- early enough ripening;
- high resistance to plant diseases;
- rare cases of harmful insect attacks;
- good fruit transportability;
- excellent taste;
- dense structure of berries and presentation.
Unfortunately, the Polish blackberry has a number of drawbacks that must be taken into account by everyone who wants to grow this crop:
- the process of abundant fruiting occurs only three years after planting;
- the sun's rays harm ripe fruit;
- small number of root suckers;
- the need for shelter in the winter season.
Gardeners should know that the taste properties of the berries depend on the landing site. For example, bushes growing in the shade endow the fruit with excess acid.Plants under direct sunlight shrink and their ovaries develop poorly.
Despite the declared heat resistance, the Polish blackberry is strongly “baked” in the sun. But this does not mean a breeder's mistake. In fact, any berry growing in hot regions may suffer from this problem. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account this fact when landing Brzeziny. As for shelters, they are not needed in southern latitudes - this, in turn, can greatly facilitate care.
Features of growing
Get a good, tasty harvest of blackberry is easy if you follow all the rules of planting and caring for the plant. Incorrect actions can not only delay the first fruits, but also ruin young seedlings.
First you need to decide on the landing site. - Choose areas protected from wind, drafts, provided with constant sunlight. Experts recommend installing a trellis for the berries, which should be placed along the fence on the south side of the house. Such fences will protect young bushes from too hot sun and wind.
You can plant seedlings in the fall or spring. Autumn planting occurs at the end of September - early October. At this time it is important for the plant to take root properly in order to be able to withstand the freezing weather. Spring plants are planted in April and May. In this case, the blackberry quickly takes root to the ground.
Planting material (seedlings) are recommended to purchase in specialized stores or from proven gardeners. When choosing a seedling, pay attention to its root system - it is better if it is closed. There are open options, however, they are designed for small shipments.
In any case, the root system of the young seedling must be provided with good protection before planting in open ground.
Landing rules
There are several important stages of planting a young blackberry plant.
- Dig an elongated pit (trench) about 30 cm deep.
- Lower the seedling into the prepared recess, sprinkle it with soil about half the height.
- The earth can be slightly condensed.
- Observe the landing scheme - 1x1.5 meters (1 m - the distance between the bushes, 1.5 - between the rows).
- Water this area liberally.
- Cover the trench with earth to the brim.
- Cover with a mulched layer of peat or sawdust.
- Be sure to leave part of the shoot on the ground (about 20 cm high), cut off the rest.
For the cultivation of "Brzeziny" fit almost any kind of soil. However, the best are considered to be slightly acidic and light soils.
Before planting, you do not need to make additional fertilizers - the blackberry does not need them. You can start feeding the soil in spring. Mineral compounds are suitable for this. Bottom part is recommended to sprinkle with special granules, you can also use liquid fertilizer. Such procedures will speed up plant recovery after the experienced winter season, as well as help strengthen the roots and enhance growth processes.
Care
The main advantage of the Brzezina blackberry is resistance to plant diseases and pests. For this reason, it is not necessary to treat the bushes too often with chemical preparations. During the flowering period, it is recommended to feed the blackberry with a composition based on minerals (especially nitrogen), and when budding begins - with complex mineral fertilizers.
Watch the condition of the soil under the bush - it should remain wet. To preserve the required amount of moisture is applied mulch layer of peat, sawdust or humus.
Despite the frost resistance, for safety it is best to prepare special shelters made of cardboard or agrofibre. So you will be calm for your plant during severe frosts.
Reproduction of the Polish blackberry occurs by dividing the root system, grafting, layering. To get high-quality seedlings, it is necessary to drop the tops of the shoots in early September. So they take root better and faster.
Collection and storage
Fruits of the Polish blackberry gardeners begin to collect as they mature. Judging by the reviews, they ripen unevenly. This can be considered as a virtue - fruits can be enjoyed before the first cold weather, and a disadvantage - you need to constantly monitor the appearance of the berries, collect them to prevent wilting.
Due to the high keeping quality, Brzezina is able to preserve its presentation and taste to the full extent for about 5 days. Fresh blackberries are recommended to be stored at a temperature range from 0 to +3 degrees. Interestingly, this berry is more nutritious and valuable than, for example, raspberry. Proper storage can retain all the benefits and nutritional value of blackberries. True, during the preparation or heat treatment of the valuable elements will be lost, but it does not make it tasteless and useless.
