Rules watering garlic salt water
Garlic is not only one of the faithful defenders of human health. It is also a widely used seasoning, which is highly appreciated by chefs.But even the presence in the plant of phytoncides does not allow him to insure against all possible problems.
Why do you need it?
For many people far from gardening, the very idea of watering garlic with salt water can cause confusion. But in reality, this treatment brings significant benefits. It suppresses many pests and prevents contamination of the culture with dangerous diseases. Given the potent nature of salt water, precautions are required. Too intense exposure can adversely affect the cultivation of vegetables and even undermine the environmental situation on the site.
Advantages and disadvantages of the method
It should be noted that among professionals, especially among practicing gardeners, there is no consensus - it is still useful to water the garlic with saline or not. Moreover, the number of supporters of each point of view is approximately the same. It does not make sense to persuade anyone, but it is worth looking at what each of the parties may be right or wrong. The positive points when using an aqueous solution of salt are:
- nitrogen saturation of the earth;
- the ability to redistribute the planting of vegetables without auxiliary treatments and enhanced fertilizer;
- suppression of nematodes and onion flies.
Objections also come down to three points:
- treatment with saline solution harms not only dangerous, but also neutral, and even beneficial insects (or scares them away);
- soil depletion and disturbance of the soil ecosystem, including far beyond a specific bed, are likely;
- it will not be possible to plant other vegetables in the same place without changing the fertile layer.
Preventive spraying
All possible problems do not stop a certain part of gardeners. But we must not forget that the processing of garlic plantings with salt is an extremely important matter, and you should not take on it without good reason. It is better to abstain from “experimenting” with normal growth and development of culture. Treatment with saline in the spring helps to cope with 2 of 3 main “brakes” of garlic development - pests and lack of beneficial substances. Spraying is preferable if you need to cope with the hoverfly or onion flies.
Recommended proportions for treatment - 0.25 kg of salt per 10 liters of warm water. Using a spray bottle, the liquid is applied to the green shoots, leaving it for several hours. It is most practical to carry out spraying in the evening. Then in the morning it will be possible to spray the garlic with plain water and pour plenty of beds.
Such processing almost guaranteed to lead to the disappearance of harmful flies, but in order to completely exclude their appearance again, it is necessary to re-spraying after 10 days.
Properly treating garlic with salt water means taking all measures so that it does not lead to a deterioration in the quality of the land. On the plot processed in one year for the next season it makes sense to plant tomatoes. An additional measure of prevention is drainage, which consists in digging ditches on the outer edge. When powerful watering is done, it will soon be possible to remove the land with salted salt from these ditches. Very strong salinization is eliminated due to the annual or two-year planting of white clover and similar absorbing crops.
Feeding garlic with salt water in open ground or in the greenhouse is quite possible. But doing this too often is hardly justified, in which case the benefit achieved is less than the damage caused. You can feed the plant, using 90 g of salt per 10 liters of water. This measure is applied only after reaching a height of 80-100 mm with a green feather. Make-up again repeated after 10 days, its key objectives:
- boost growth;
- increased bulging speed;
- suppression of premature yellowing of leaves.
Fight against diseases and pests
And yet, the main function of salt water when dealing with garlic is protection from harmful insects.The first time to process the plant from onion flies need a solution of salt in a concentration of 2%. It is necessary to wait until the phase of bookmarking 3-5 sheets begins. An urgent need to prepare the same solution for irrigation, if preventive measures have failed, the pests of the crops and diseases have already begun their destructive “work”.
Reasons for alarm are:
- seedling yellowness;
- fragility and weakening of greenery;
- slow growth
When, in the first days of May, saltwater prophylaxis was already carried out, but it did not save individual plants, only them should be sprayed. Do not exceed the concentration recommended for prophylactic treatment. Neither adverse weather conditions, nor a large population of insects, nor a significant risk of crop loss justify the possible consequences. It is imperative to wash off the salt that fell on the plants using clean water. Repeated exposure can be carried out only after 10 days, and if the situation has stabilized, it is better to wait 2-3 weeks.
It is important to understand that excessive fluid pressure can damage plants. Even seemingly insignificant deformations have a global impact on the harvest in the future. An additional risk is that the most insignificant injury of garlic opens the way into the plant for pathological fungi.
Watering should be done carefully with a watering can and strictly under the root. The increased complexity of such work is justified by its increased efficiency.
Advance preparation will help prevent the negative effects of salt watering garlic. It is produced by soaking garlic for 12 hours. It does not use water, and a special solution. A glass of salt is diluted with 10 liters of water. The upper shell impregnated with it will reliably protect the vegetable from gnawing by harmful larvae.
